Latham & Watkins said it has added finance partner Max Silverstein to its New York office, a hire the firm is positioning as another step in expanding its top-ranked capital markets and finance platform amid rising demand for complex sponsor and credit-fund financings and liability management work.
The firm said Silverstein joins as a partner in the Capital Markets Practice and brings substantial experience advising sponsors, corporates, and credit funds on sophisticated financings and restructuring-adjacent matters. Latham framed his arrival as strengthening its fully integrated corporate and finance offering, particularly in areas where direct lending and special situations activity is converging with workouts and restructuring dynamics.
Silverstein’s practice focuses on direct lending, special situations transactions, workouts, restructurings, and insolvency matters. Latham said he regularly represents private equity sponsors, portfolio companies, corporate borrowers, and credit funds across a broad range of leveraged finance transactions, including acquisition financings, leveraged buyouts, recapitalizations, and asset-based and other senior secured credit facilities. The firm also highlighted his experience advising on complex asset-based term loans and revolvers, including first-in, last-out financings, a structure often used to address liquidity needs and capital structure complexity in sponsor-backed and special-situations contexts.
Latham’s leadership characterized the move as directly aligned with the firm’s growth areas, pointing to the intersection of direct lending, special situations, and restructuring as both a strategic priority and a segment where client demand is accelerating. The firm’s global liability management leadership also emphasized Silverstein’s fit with a platform that increasingly serves clients across the capital stack, reflecting how financing mandates today often combine traditional credit execution with amendment-driven solutions, opportunistic capital, and restructuring know-how.
The firm placed the hire within the broader investment cycle of its New York bench. Latham said Silverstein is the latest partner addition to its integrated global finance and corporate platform, noting that over the past year, it has added a series of prominent practitioners in New York as it builds depth across financing, capital markets, and liability management.
Support: Silverstein joins Latham from Ropes & Gray. He earned his JD from Columbia Law School, an MA from Relay Graduate School of Education, and a BS from Pennsylvania State University.
