“One of the most interesting, and shocking, stories since I began leading my company happened during a hiring process that taught me some invaluable lessons about trust and due diligence. I had hired a seemingly soft-spoken, petite, middle-aged woman with brunette hair who appeared to have the right experience and demeanor for the role. She started with us right away, even before her background check results came in, as we were eager to fill the position and believed she’d be a great fit based on her interview.”
“A few days later, the results of her background check came back, and what I read was jaw-dropping. I googled her, and it turned out that this unassuming woman had spent time in federal prison for murder and had been convicted of leading a heroin drug ring in New Jersey. Her complex history seemed entirely at odds with her quiet, almost gentle appearance. I was stunned, not just by her past, but by the realization that I hadn’t waited for the final details before bringing her on board.”
“This experience taught me the importance of patience and thoroughness in hiring. It reminded me that appearances and first impressions can sometimes be deceiving and that background checks and other safeguards are there for a reason. Since then, I’ve committed to ensuring every step of the hiring process is completed, no matter how good a candidate might seem. “Leadership often involves making tough decisions or choosing between two seemingly good paths. One of the hardest decisions I’ve ever faced was when I had to let go of two key employees. I knew they didn’t quite fit the culture of my company, but at the same time, I desperately needed their contributions. We were in the midst of an incredibly busy season, and I understood that letting them go would require significant effort to find replacements who were both skilled and aligned with our core values. It felt like I was fighting for the soul of my company, but ultimately, I made the difficult call to part ways.”
“That decision was deeply challenging, and looking back, I’m not sure I would handle it the same way if I had to do it again. However, I recognized that I couldn’t allow anyone to undermine or sabotage what we had built. So, I returned to handling the day-to-day tasks – answering phones, managing quotes, and overseeing emails – things I hadn’t done in years.”
“Surprisingly, I’m glad I made that tough choice. It earned me the respect of my team and helped restore harmony and unity within our culture.
