Letara has raised approximately ¥2.6 billion, or about $16.3 million, in a Pre-Series A financing round to accelerate development and commercialization of its low-cost, mass-producible hybrid rocket engines for launch, on-orbit propulsion, defense, and security applications.
The round was co-led by Headline Asia, JIC Venture Growth Investments and Incubate Fund and attracted investor demand exceeding Letara’s original fundraising target.
Additional strategic investors included Aozora Corporate Investment, SMBC Venture Capital, NES Corporation, Gogin Capital, Toyoda Gosei, BIG Impact, Frontier Innovations, Mitsui Sumitomo Insurance Venture Capital, Mitsubishi UFJ Capital and mint.
Based in Sapporo, Japan, Letara is led by co-CEOs Shota Hirai and Landon Thomas Kamps and originated from research conducted at Hokkaido University.
The company is developing next-generation rocket propulsion around a hybrid architecture that stores fuel and oxidizer separately.
Instead of using conventional explosive solid or liquid propellants, Letara’s system can use common commercially available plastic as fuel.
The company said its propellant does not fall under the legal category of explosives, creating potential safety advantages while simplifying the overall rocket-engine design.
Using readily available plastic also gives Letara access to ordinary commercial supply chains, which the company believes can make its propulsion systems easier and less expensive to manufacture at scale.
Hybrid rocket propulsion has been researched for decades, but developers have historically faced challenges achieving stable ignition and thrust levels comparable with conventional rocket engines.
Letara says its founders addressed those limitations through a proprietary fuel design and manufacturing process developed at Hokkaido University.
The approach enables fuel to burn consistently from end to end, supporting stable combustion and high thrust.
Letara combines that fuel architecture with a patented ignition system designed to fire reliably even at low power.
The company says the resulting propulsion system can achieve thrust performance comparable with conventional solid rocket motors and liquid bipropellant systems.
Letara has also miniaturized the technology into engines as small as palm-sized units.
The compact design potentially expands the range of vehicles and systems that can incorporate the propulsion technology, including smaller spacecraft and other applications where size, weight and manufacturing cost are significant constraints.
The company is targeting uses across satellite launch systems, in-space propulsion and defense and security markets.
Its broader mission is to develop low-cost propulsion technology capable of helping “deliver anything, anywhere, within 24 hours.”
Letara said commercial demand for the technology has already begun emerging.
Since its seed financing, the company has received orders from rocket companies, satellite businesses and the Japanese government.
Investor JIC Venture Growth Investments said Letara has also generated demand from public-sector organizations and private companies, including customers outside Japan.
The company has additionally progressed from the STS stage to the PCA phase of NEDO’s Deep Tech Startup Support Program.
Letara has also been registered as a JAXA Partner Startup and selected as a J-Startup company, providing additional third-party recognition of its technology and development capabilities.
The new financing will be used to move the propulsion technology further toward practical deployment, accelerate research and development and expand Letara’s workforce.
The company is recruiting across a range of positions, including new graduates, mid-career employees and other roles, as it builds engineering and operational capacity in Japan and internationally.
Letara’s investors see the company’s combination of Japanese and American engineering talent, Hokkaido University research and proprietary hybrid propulsion technology as a potential foundation for a broader rocket-engine platform.
The company is seeking to establish that platform at a time when growth in commercial launch, satellite deployment, national security and in-space infrastructure is increasing demand for propulsion systems that can be manufactured at lower cost and in greater volumes.
