LexisNexis Expands Legal AI Capabilities With Next-Generation Protégé General AI Release

LexisNexis Legal & Professional announced a significant expansion of its legal AI platform with the next-generation release of Protégé General AI. This unified environment now blends authoritative LexisNexis legal content, customer documents, and open web data. The upgraded system is designed to give legal professionals broader analytical capabilities, improved drafting tools, and more advanced reasoning features within the secure Lexis+ AI environment.

The updated platform allows users to work with either Protégé Legal AI, optimized for legal drafting and analysis workflows, or Protégé General AI, which supports a broader range of tasks using the latest commercially available AI models. The system’s new Best Fit option can automatically select the most appropriate model for a given task, with available options including Claude Sonnet 4.5, GPT-5.1, GPT-5, GPT-4o, Claude Sonnet 4, and OpenAI o3. The platform also integrates Shepard’s Citation Agent to check, verify, and link to authoritative citations during the drafting process.

Protégé General AI now provides a more unified experience by blending insights from legal content, proprietary customer documents, and web sources. Additional capabilities include advanced reasoning, deeper research features for tackling complex legal problems, and complete user control over which source types the AI draws from. The redesigned interface centralizes questions, sources, citations, and drafts in a single place, creating a more efficient workflow.

The release follows the October launch of Protégé General AI and signals the company’s rapid AI development pace. The platform is intended to support a wide range of legal tasks, from drafting client communications to developing strategic recommendations grounded in a real-world context. Users can also upload documents for summarization, issue spotting, and audience-specific formatting across many file types.

The latest capabilities are powered by a new agentic infrastructure that coordinates multiple AI agents, including an Orchestrator Agent, a Legal Research Agent, a Web Search Agent, and a Customer Document Research Agent. These agents work together to interpret user intent, break down legal questions, plan research steps, and pull in insights from both legal and nonlegal sources. The system builds on Agentic Retrieval-Augmented Generation, which is designed to retrieve the most relevant information and produce grounded, accurate responses.

LexisNexis noted that Protégé continues to be developed in alignment with the RELX Responsible AI Principles, with more than 2,000 technologists and experts contributing to the platform. The company’s multi-cloud technology stack integrates advancements from AWS, Anthropic, Microsoft, Mistral, and OpenAI, and Shepard’s Citation Service supports all responses for added trust and authority.
