LightPath Technologies, an Orlando-based provider of optics and infrared imaging systems, has received an $11 million follow-on purchase order for infrared cameras from an undisclosed leading global technology customer, for use in counter-unmanned aerial systems (C-UAS) applications. The order continues a purchasing relationship previously established through prior orders with the same customer and reflects growing demand for LightPath’s infrared camera systems in public safety and defense markets.
A notable element of the order is a planned technology transition embedded in the program: over the course of the contract, LightPath expects to migrate the customer from Germanium-based optics to its proprietary BlackDiamond material — a domestically produced chalcogenide-based glass alternative developed under exclusive license from the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory. The transition carries both supply chain and margin implications. Germanium, a critical material used in infrared optics, has been subject to tightening export restrictions as the U.S. and China have escalated controls over strategic minerals. BlackDiamond offers customers a domestically sourced alternative that reduces exposure to those supply chain vulnerabilities. For LightPath, the shift supports its broader transition toward higher-value, vertically integrated camera solutions, which carry higher revenue per unit and improved gross margins compared to component-only sales.
LightPath is a vertically integrated optics company with manufacturing facilities in Orlando, Florida, as well as Texas, New Hampshire, Latvia, and China. Its product range spans BlackDiamond chalcogenide glass materials through complete infrared optical systems and thermal imaging assemblies.
KEY QUOTES:
“This follow-on order reflects the deepening relationship with one of our most significant customers and the expanding role of our infrared camera systems in public safety applications, where reliability and performance are mission-critical. It further highlights the growing pipeline of meaningful orders we are securing as customers seek superior products supported by secure, domestic supply chains. Importantly, we expect to transition this customer from Germanium-based optics to our proprietary BlackDiamond materials over the course of this program. As a domestically produced, non-Germanium alternative, BlackDiamond helps customers secure their supply chains amid tightening export restrictions on Germanium, while supporting our continued transition toward higher-value, vertically integrated camera solutions and the higher revenue and gross margins that accompany it.”
