LIV Golf has entered a court-supervised Chapter 11 restructuring process as the professional golf league seeks to address existing financial obligations and complete a transaction designed to establish a more sustainable business model.
The league said it is entering the process with a clear plan and support from BC Partners, which it described as a well-capitalized investor with significant experience across sports and entertainment. LIV Golf said the restructuring provides the time and legal framework required to address prior obligations while advancing a transaction for the league’s next phase.
As part of the process, LIV Golf said it is winding down “LIV 1.0” while working toward a transaction that would preserve the league under new investors and introduce what it described as an innovative players-first ownership model. The process remains subject to court approvals and other customary conditions.
LIV Golf intends to resume its global team-based competition in 2027 under new ownership, subject to court and relevant stakeholder approvals. The league has not yet made definitive decisions regarding the 2027 schedule or individual events.
The planned next phase would retain team golf at the center of LIV’s model while creating greater economic alignment between players and the league. Players are expected to have an opportunity to participate directly in the value they help create, while individual teams would be positioned to develop into longer-term global sports businesses.
LIV also outlined several potential changes to its competitive format. The league intends to expand tournament fields to 75 players, introduce a cut and create additional pathways into LIV Golf, including Monday qualifiers.
The league also expects to continue competing across five continents, including events in Australia, South Africa, Mexico, England, Hong Kong and the U.S. More LIV teams are expected to adopt national identities as the organization seeks to build on the appeal of World Cup-style competition.
LIV said children under 12 will continue to receive free admission to its events, while players will maintain a significant presence with fans both at tournaments and through social media. The league also plans to continue evolving its format with players and partners while seeking greater access to the biggest stages in golf.
Existing tickets purchased for 2027 events remain valid and are currently not eligible for refunds. LIV said it will communicate directly with ticket holders if changes affect a particular event.
