LogicMark specializes in designing connected care devices, ensuring help is always within reach during emergencies. Pulse 2.0 interviewed LogicMark CEO Chia-Lin Simmons to learn more about the company.
Chia-Lin Simmons’ Background
Could you tell me more about your background? Simmons said:
“Before becoming CEO of LogicMark, I was the CEO and co-founder of LookyLoo, a patented AI social commerce company. At LookyLoo, we developed a technology platform that utilized social collaboration, images, and AI to help people find the perfect clothing in fit and style while reducing clothing returns through online e-commerce. It’s estimated that 5 billion tons of waste is generated through clothing returns.”
“Before co-founding my startup, I served as the Head of Global Partner Marketing for Google Play Music and the Google Play Store, the VP of Marketing & Content for Harman International/Samsung, the VP of Marketing and General Manager of Playphone North America, a senior business development executive at Time Warner/AOL, and the VP of Strategic Alliances at Audible/Amazon.”
“I’m on the board of directors, audit committee, and compensation committee, and am the head of the nominating committee for Chromocell, a NYSE-listed biotech company developing non-addictive treatments for chronic pain. I also sit on the investment board for Servco Pacific, where I previously served on the governing board and audit committee; Servco is a global company with interests in automotive and musical products, and it is Fender’s majority shareholder. Additionally, I’m a board member and a part of the nominating and compensation committee at New Energy Nexus, supporting clean energy startups worldwide. As an active angel investor in tech, I founded the #bindersproject to connect women tech founders with global funders.”
Primary Responsibilities At The Company
What are your primary responsibilities at the company? Simmons shared:
“As CEO of LogicMark, my primary responsibilities are to foster innovation and technology development in the company, increase revenue, increase margins, and reduce operational costs. My goal is to continue guiding the company toward increasing long-term shareholder value and providing the best in class experience so that people can age gracefully and their caretakers can feel comfort in knowing we are part of their care village.”
“In the past few years, I have been focused on guiding the company’s shift from a hardware-centric approach to a broader focus on a technology platform with software driven by AI and machine learning, all centered around the customer experience. I lead efforts in product innovation, emphasizing modernizing personal safety and aging technology—an industry that has been stagnant for decades. My responsibilities include overseeing the development of cutting-edge products like the Freedom Alert Max, which provides fall prevention and video communication, and the Aster App and Bluetooth Button, aimed at enhancing personal safety for women. I also focus on expanding our technology portfolio; we have filed 17 new patents since starting my position at LogicMark. Our goal is to position LogicMark as a technology leader in the industry.”
Favorite Memory
What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Simmons reflected:
“Overall, I think all of us at LogicMark feel joy, energy, and excitement when we see our direct impact on people’s lives. We get emails from our customers telling us that our devices got them critical, life-saving help when they most needed the product. Many technology companies talk about having a mission, and it’s always great seeing that mission daily. My favorite experience is launching the Freedom Alert Max, which demonstrates our commitment to continuously bringing new and useful features to our customers through our platform. No one needs to have a fixed medical alert experience anymore. We will launch new features on our platform that we hope will provide our customers with more confidence for independent living.”
“On a personal level, It’s been wonderful to work at a remote-first company but still see how connected we can be as a company team. Despite being mostly remote, the team is very close. When we see each other in person, it’s fantastic to connect and have a good time. For example, we have an annual holiday get-together every year in Louisville, Kentucky, where our headquarters is based. Every year, we have a lot of fun with our ugly sweater contests (lots of competition! I’ve never won, but I keep trying) and the fierce Yankee Swap gift exchange! I’m still thinking about that foot massager I lost and hoping we see one again in the gift pile this year!”
Core Products
What are the company’s core products and features? Simmons explained:
LogicMark’s suite of products offers comprehensive safety solutions, each tailored to specific needs. These products include:
1.) Freedom Alert Max: The Freedom Alert Max is the most advanced medical alert device with cellular communication technology on the market, with fall detection that utilizes emergency video validation for falls. Over-the-air updates provide new features regularly on top of the company’s feature-rich offerings. Combining the 24/7 assurance of a monitored medical alert device with the convenience of a cell phone, the Freedom Alert Max addresses the growing need for modern, mobile technology for seniors and their caregivers in a single device through geofencing, fall detection, and more! The Freedom Alert Max’s proprietary fall detection technology senses falls and sudden movements and immediately calls for help, even if the person cannot speak or use the device. As falls and movements are detected, the LogicMark algorithm can learn patterns to prevent false positives and use that information to predict when future falls are likely to happen. The device also ensures that vulnerable seniors get help as quickly as possible during mental and emotional crises. With 22% of suicides occurring in the older adult population, the device seeks to support our users by coming pre-programmed with the suicide and crisis lifeline (988). Robust GPS location and geofencing capabilities eliminate the concern of aging adults with Alzheimer’s and other forms of dementia wandering off while still offering independence and the ability to age in place. Geofencing will allow caregivers to set a map boundary and receive alert notifications when the device crosses those areas.
2.) Freedom Alert Mini: Compact and portable, this device allows users to connect directly with emergency services at the touch of a button. Its fall detection and geofencing features alert caregivers in case of a fall or if the wearer moves outside a set boundary. These features are ideal for individuals who are prone to wandering, such as those with dementia.
3.) Aster App: This mobile app transforms a smartphone into a safety device with 24/7 monitoring and location-based alerts. Integrated with a user’s calendar, it shares specific events with friends and family. A simple swipe or press triggers a GPS-enabled alert to emergency services in an emergency, notifying selected contacts.
4.) Aster Bluetooth Button: Designed to pair seamlessly with the Aster app, this button provides quick, discreet access to emergency services by pressing it three times. It’s ideal for anyone seeking added security on the go, from students to seniors.
5.) Guardian Alert 911 Plus: This 4G LTE-enabled device offers two-way communication directly with 911, operates indoors and outdoors, and doesn’t come with any monthly fees. The device is water-resistant and landline-free, ensuring reliable emergency support wherever needed.
6.) Guardian Alert 911: A straightforward, landline-based emergency device with a two-way voice pendant, this model connects users directly to 911 for peace of mind in low-signal areas, offering simple and reliable emergency access.
7.) Freedom Alert: This rechargeable landline-connected device allows for up to four programmable contacts, enabling seniors to call family, friends, or 911 at the push of a button.
Evolution Of The Company’s Technology
How has the company’s technology evolved since its launch? Simmons noted:
“We were solely a hardware company when I came on board in June 2021. Our goal was to grow into a technology platform company that provided the best experience for personal safety and security. Hardware is part of that solution, but our interest was to create a service platform that other hardware developers can use and to build a recurring revenue and SaaS model.”
“Most importantly, we have focused on becoming a company that develops reactive technology in addition to predictive technology. What does that mean? We certainly have focused on better understanding false positives for falls – knowing what’s a fall and what’s not. However, we also wanted to try to prevent falls before they even happen by looking at user patterns. The information we gather helps us identify potential fall risks so that we can work with caretakers to improve safety. It’s been exciting to move LogicMark to being a true technology company again.”
Significant Milestones
What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Simmons cited:
“Some of LogicMark’s key milestones include transforming the personal emergency response system (PERS) industry from a reactive to a proactive model. We’ve developed predictive technology to prevent incidents—like falls—before they occur rather than simply responding to them. This shift is achieved by using digital twin data and monitoring daily behaviors to identify potential risks, positioning LogicMark as a leader in predictive, user-centered safety technology. Another significant milestone has been the widespread adoption of our products. We have sold over 800,000 units to date, reflecting our impact and growth in the personal safety and aging technology market.”
Customer Success Stories
When asking Simmons about customer success stories, she highlighted the following quotes:
Sharing several customer testimonials and the impact our solutions have had:
— “I bought this for my 93 yr old dad. He lives home alone, and this gives us all peace of mind that he will get help right away if anything happens to him. The best money I’ve ever spent. He enjoys his independence and knows help will be there quickly if he needs it.” -Martina K.
— “I purchased the LogicMark Guardian Alert from Amazon for my elderly sister. Not too long after it was set up, which is very simple to do, she suffered a stroke and was able to summon help immediately. For a life-saving device, this is surprisingly inexpensive, and I strongly recommend the Alert for any person that may have a problem getting to a telephone when help is needed.” – Allen F.
— One of our customers fell outside, and her medical alert flung off her neck and landed close enough to her that she could have reached it. When she went to reach for it, a squirrel grabbed it and ran up a tree. Having a medical alert device was very important to her, and she had received it free through the VA. We sent her a complimentary replacement to ensure she had protection and independence.
— “I purchased this for my Father who is 89 years old and wheelchair bound. I had been wanting to get him a similar product for years due to him falling out of bed or falling while trying to stand up and get something out of the refrigerator. He would have to crawl across the house to get his house phone to call 911. The main issue is the location he lives in has very poor cellular signal and they all used cellular technology to call for help. This was the only one I could find that allows you to use a landline. He has zero skills with computers or any technology above a remote control. Once it arrived I installed the device in less than 2 minutes and tested it out to make sure that it worked. I was immediately connected to our local 911 and they confirmed that they had his address and name. A few days later he fell out of bed and all he had to do was press one button and was immediately connected to 911 and had the EMTs by his side in less than 15 minutes. I am so happy and thankful with this product. I highly recommend. Also there are no subscription fees which is incredible.”
Funding
When asking Simmons about the company’s revenue details, she revealed:
“LogicMark’s 2023 Revenue was $9.9 million. In the company’s Q3 Investor report, LogicMark announced a promising financial performance marked by a 14% year-over-year increase in revenues, reaching $2.7 million for the quarter. Gross profit rose to $1.8 million, reflecting a 13% growth compared to Q3 2023, while the company maintained a strong gross margin of 67%, consistent over the past six quarters. Operating expenses remained steady at $3.4 million, matching the prior year’s level, underscoring disciplined cost management despite the revenue growth.”
Total Addressable Market
What total addressable market (TAM) size is the company pursuing? Simmons assessed
“With people in the U.S. aging better and living longer, older adults are one of the fastest-growing groups in the country. By 2030, all baby boomers will be age 65 or older. By 2040, nearly 1 in 4 Americans will fall within that age group. This demographic has the greatest risk to health and safety due to increased fall risks, chronic illnesses, and the typical effects of aging.”
“The 50+ population’s spending on technology is forecasted to grow from $140B in 2018 to $623B in 2050. That fact makes the 50+ age market a great demographic to focus on for investing in new technologies designed specifically for them.”
“As the senior population increases, so does the burden placed on family caregivers due to the ongoing caregiver crisis. Nearly one in three millennials and two in five Gen Xers either manage or help manage their parents’ healthcare, according to GoHealth; this makes this group another key market. According to the Global Coalition on Aging report, the number of eldercare workers will need to increase by 60% by 2040 to maintain the current ratio of caregivers to older people. In numbers, that is 13.5 million new care workers. In the U.S., where 70% of Americans who reach age 65 will need long-term services and support, there will be a national shortage of 151,000 care workers by 2030 and a 355,000 caregiver shortfall by 2040. Much of the caregiver shortage’s emotional, physical, and financial strain falls on family members. In 2021-22, 37.1 million family caregivers provided unpaid care to a family or non-family member aged 65 and older. Additionally, 67% of family caregivers have difficulty balancing their jobs with caregiving duties.”
“In addition to technology helping caregivers and older people, personal safety for all ages has become a major concern. The applicability of PERS can help people of all ages in many use cases, from walking home at odd hours of the night or in dangerous neighborhoods to location tracking for personal safety.”
Differentiation From The Competition
What differentiates the company from its competition? Simmons affirmed:
“LogicMark differentiates itself by creating technology specifically designed for today’s seniors, who are more tech-savvy than previous generations. Our offerings focus on user-friendly, effective personal emergency response systems that prioritize simplicity and functionality to meet seniors’ needs without the complexities that can come with other products. This user-centered design approach puts seniors and caregivers at the core of our development, ensuring that our technology is accessible and practical for daily use.”
“Another critical differentiator is our shift from reactive to predictive technology. Traditional medical alert products often only respond after a fall or emergency has already occurred, a delay that can have severe consequences. LogicMark’s technology actively monitors daily behavior patterns and identifies shifts that could indicate an increased fall risk, enabling preemptive interventions. This proactive approach enhances seniors’ overall health, safety, and awareness, making our products a step forward in preventative care and active safety management.”
“LogicMark’s solutions integrate multiple functions in a seamless, real-time system, providing more than just basic emergency alerts. With the Aster app and Bluetooth button, users can connect with family and friends, share geolocation data, and set up safety check-ins, all without needing to unlock a phone or access a single-function device. This all-in-one capability and easy feature integration distinguishes LogicMark from competitors by offering a more comprehensive, reliable safety network for seniors and their loved ones.”
Future Goals
What are some of the company’s future goals? Simmons emphasized:
“We expect to continue bringing amazing new features to our products and expanding and growing our channels.”
Additional Thoughts
Any other topics you would like to discuss? Simmons concluded:
“AI / ML is consistently being talked about as ‘the new thing.’ In particular, so much focus has been on video, pictures, etc. The reality is that AI is a really exciting application in healthcare. From work that’s being done on applying AI so that it can detect potential cancers years before they are a threat to what we’re working on here at LogicMark (predicting and preventing potential falls that may result in health problems), applied AI in healthcare is an exciting area to focus on for anyone interested in this field.”
