LPL Financial has appointed Jonathan Lewis as Managing Director and Chief Technology and Information Officer as the approximately $2.6 trillion wealth management platform continues expanding its investments in artificial intelligence, digital infrastructure and advisor technology.
Lewis will oversee architecture, engineering, infrastructure and development across LPL’s technology organization.
He will report to Greg Gates, who has assumed the broader title of Group Managing Director and Chief Product and Technology Officer.
The leadership structure gives LPL dedicated senior oversight across both product and core technology functions as the company continues modernizing the systems that support advisors, institutions and end clients.
Lewis joins LPL from Wells Fargo, where he served as Head of Digital and Trading Technology for Wealth Management.
In that role, he led large-scale technology platforms supporting wealth management operations and helped advance AI-powered engineering initiatives.
His experience at Wells Fargo included responsibility for technology environments that support digital experiences, trading capabilities and complex wealth management workflows.
Before Wells Fargo, Lewis served as Head of Asset Management Technology at J.P. Morgan.
That background gives him experience across both wealth management and institutional asset management technology, including the infrastructure required to support investment products, trading, operations and client-facing platforms.
At LPL, Lewis will be responsible for helping scale the technology foundation behind one of the largest independent wealth management platforms in the U.S.
LPL supports more than 32,000 financial advisors and approximately 1,100 financial institutions.
The company services and custodies roughly $2.6 trillion in brokerage and advisory assets for approximately eight million Americans.
Supporting a platform of that size requires substantial investment in reliability, cybersecurity, data infrastructure, cloud systems, advisor tools and application development.
Artificial intelligence is also becoming a larger component of wealth management technology as firms look for ways to improve advisor productivity, automate operational processes and provide more personalized client experiences.
AI tools can potentially assist advisors with tasks such as research, meeting preparation, client communications, workflow management and data analysis.
For large platforms such as LPL, deploying those technologies at scale also requires strong underlying architecture, governance and infrastructure.
Lewis’ background in AI-powered engineering initiatives is therefore particularly relevant as LPL increases its technology investments.
His responsibilities across architecture and engineering will include the systems that determine how new applications are built, connected and deployed across the organization.
Infrastructure oversight will also be important as LPL continues supporting a large and growing advisor base while maintaining the performance and resilience expected from a major financial services platform.
The appointment reflects the increasingly strategic role of technology within wealth management.
Independent advisors now expect their platforms to provide integrated tools spanning portfolio management, trading, financial planning, compliance, client engagement and business operations.
Technology can also influence advisor recruiting and retention, making platform capabilities an important competitive factor among wealth management firms.
By adding Lewis as Chief Technology and Information Officer and expanding Gates’ role to Chief Product and Technology Officer, LPL is strengthening senior leadership across both product strategy and technical execution.
The structure is intended to support continued investment in new capabilities while ensuring the underlying technology platform can scale alongside LPL’s advisor and institutional businesses.
Lewis’ experience at Wells Fargo and J.P. Morgan gives him a background managing technology in highly regulated financial environments with significant operational complexity.
That experience is expected to support LPL as the company continues developing AI-enabled tools, modernizing infrastructure and expanding the digital capabilities available across its wealth management ecosystem.
