Lumentum Cloud Transceiver Revenue Jumps More Than 173% As Optical Circuit Switches Add Over $90 Million

Lumentum’s cloud transceiver revenue increased by more than 173% during fiscal 2026, while the initial ramp of its optical circuit switch products contributed more than $90 million in revenue. Together, the two businesses give Lumentum exposure to different layers of the expanding optical infrastructure being deployed inside cloud and AI data centers.

The cloud transceiver increase was driven primarily by higher shipment volumes, although the benefit was partially offset by lower average selling prices. Lumentum said it continued the initial phase of optical circuit switch shipments during the year and remains on track to expand manufacturing capacity over the coming quarters to support future growth.

Optical circuit switching represents an emerging part of AI data-center architecture. Lumentum describes scale-up optical systems as using high-speed photonics and optical switches to directly cluster GPUs and AI accelerators within the compute fabric, improving cluster efficiency and processing speed.

The company is investing in several related technologies, including higher-speed and higher-power laser chips for datacom transceivers, next-generation high-speed optical transceiver modules and optical circuit switching that can move data directly between fiber connections inside data centers.

That demand helped drive companywide revenue to $3.01 billion, up 83.2% from $1.65 billion. Components revenue increased 79.7% to $2.01 billion, while Systems revenue increased 90.7% to approximately $1.01 billion.

Laser chips and laser assemblies were another major contributor. Their shipment ramp accounted for approximately 78% of the $889.3 million increase in Components revenue, supported by broad demand across intra-data-center, data-center interconnect and long-haul applications. Average selling prices also increased modestly as the product mix shifted toward 200G lane speeds.

The transition toward 200G optical lanes effectively doubles the data-transfer rate of traditional 100G lanes and is part of the wider move toward higher-bandwidth optical infrastructure as hyperscale operators expand AI computing clusters. Lumentum said cloud computing and AI are accelerating the shift from traditional copper interconnects toward high-speed photonics.

Higher volumes also produced significant operating leverage. Gross profit increased 173.1% to $1.26 billion, while gross margin expanded to 41.7% from 28%. Operating expenses fell to 24.3% of revenue from 38.9%, producing an operating margin of 17.4% compared with a 10.9% operating loss margin in fiscal 2025.

Lumentum said approximately 54% of the dollar increase in gross margin resulted from lower manufacturing costs as a percentage of revenue, primarily because of higher internal factory utilization. Another 29% came from a shift toward higher-margin products, while lower acquired-intangible amortization accounted for the remaining 17%.

Liquidity also strengthened significantly. Cash and equivalents increased to approximately $2.04 billion from $520.7 million, while short-term investments increased to $694.9 million from $356.4 million. Operating activities generated $751.4 million of cash during fiscal 2026.

The company’s GAAP bottom line was distorted by its convertible-debt restructuring. Lumentum recorded a $7.76 billion loss on debt extinguishment after exchanging approximately 10.6 million shares for more than $1.1 billion of convertible-note principal and associated conversion value. As a result, the company reported a large GAAP net loss despite substantial improvement in its underlying operating results.

The operating growth nevertheless illustrates how quickly AI infrastructure demand is affecting Lumentum’s product portfolio. Cloud transceivers are scaling rapidly as data-center bandwidth requirements rise, while optical circuit switches are becoming a meaningful revenue contributor as hyperscale architecture increasingly moves optical technology deeper into AI compute fabrics.
