Lumia: $7 Million Raised To Launch Smart Earrings That Track Real-Time Blood Flow

Boston-based health-tech startup Lumia has raised $7 million in new funding as it launches Lumia 2, a smart earring that continuously tracks real-time blood flow to the head and translates those signals into insights on energy, focus, and mental clarity.

The capital comes from J2 Ventures, BonAngels Venture Partners, and angel investors, alongside $5.1 million in government contracts and grants, bringing Lumia’s total funding to $17.2 million. The fresh round will support broader access to the product and further development of the company’s blood-flow sensing technology and software.

Lumia was initially developed with researchers at Johns Hopkins, Duke, and Harvard to support patients with chronic blood flow disorders such as POTS and Long COVID-19. While the first-generation product focused on medically complex users, Lumia 2 is aimed at a much wider audience, positioning blood-flow visibility as a foundation for everyday performance, cognition, and wellness.

Lumia 2 is built as an earring back that can pair with multiple styles, including huggie hoops, cuffs, and studs in gold, silver, and clear finishes. The device uses the company’s PreciseLight sensor and associated electronics to capture signals near the heart and brain that are difficult to measure at the wrist or finger. Weighing under 1 gram and roughly five times smaller than AirPods, the earring is pitched as the world’s smallest wearable.

Beyond blood-flow tracking, Lumia 2 includes many of the metrics now standard in wearables, such as sleep, temperature, menstrual cycle, and readiness tracking. Lumia argues that the ear is a superior sensing location, enabling more continuous wear and cleaner physiological signals while allowing users to continue wearing their preferred watches and rings. The hardware is paired with low-profile, sleep-friendly earrings made from non-allergenic materials like platinum and titanium, plus a locking earring back and swappable battery packs designed for 24/7 use.

The company emphasizes that changes in blood flow reflect hydration, diet, posture, movement, and sleep, giving users a more direct view of why they might experience brain fog, lightheadedness, or fatigue even when conventional vital signs look normal. Lumia’s science has been validated in peer-reviewed studies, including in the Journal of the American Heart Association and the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, and the team highlights a growing body of data connecting daily habits with circulation patterns.

Lumia 2 will launch initially in the United States and Canada with support for both iOS and Android apps. Lumia 1 is now open to general orders, and existing Lumia 1 members will be eligible for free upgrades to Lumia 2 through the company’s Edge Access Membership. Founded in early 2020 by former Bose engineers and serial entrepreneurs, Lumia has grown to a 35-person team in Boston and holds or has pending 11 patents related to blood-flow sensing, miniaturization, and ear-based wearable design. Lumia 2 is not yet an FDA-cleared medical device and is positioned as a tool for lifestyle insights rather than diagnosis or treatment, with diagnostic capabilities under evaluation for a future regulatory filing.
