Lumivero: Interview With Chief Transformation Officer Tessa Barron About Defensible AI For Qualitative Research

Lumivero provides AI-powered research and decision software, and its NVivo platform has been a mainstay of qualitative data analysis for more than 30 years. With the launch of NVivo AI Cloud, powered by AURA, the Lumivero AI-powered Unified Research Assistant, the company is bringing AI agents into qualitative research while requiring researcher approval and source traceability for every AI action. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Lumivero Chief Transformation Officer Tessa Barron to learn more about the company’s approach to AI-assisted qualitative research, research integrity, and the future of NVivo.

Tessa Barron’s Background

When asked about her professional background and the experiences that led her to Lumivero, Barron shared:

I’ve spent more than 15 years in technology marketing and go-to-market leadership, including roles at ON24, Google, and Apigee.

Across all of them, what I kept coming back to was how a company’s customers actually behave and how the business creates value for them.

I came to Lumivero in 2024 as Chief Marketing Officer, and that business-first view of marketing is what pulled me into a broader role.

Today I focus on helping Lumivero transform how we serve researchers, and this is a big moment for that.

Primary Responsibilities

When asked about her primary responsibilities, Barron explained:

My role is to help Lumivero evolve from a portfolio of trusted products into an AI-enabled platform company, and to make sure that shift is grounded in what our customers need.

In practice, that means aligning product, go-to-market, and the customer experience around one question: how do we bring AI to researchers in a way they can trust?

Researchers are working with leaner teams and shorter timelines, but they are also rightly skeptical of any tool that can’t show its work.

My job is to make sure we hold both of those truths at once.

Favorite Memory

When asked about her favorite memory from working at Lumivero, Barron recalled:

One of my favorite moments was hearing Dr. Silvana di Gregorio, our Head of Qualitative Research and Product Research Director, talk about how qualitative analysis used to be done with note cards and files.

Silvana is a sociologist who has spent decades in this field, and she saw right away that we’re solving the same problem, only in a new and innovative way.

The goal hasn’t changed since the days of note cards: stay close to the text and be able to show your work. What’s changed is that we can now do that at a scale no one could manage by hand.

That’s what I mean by rigor at scale, and it’s why the benefit goes well beyond the technology.

Research gets better the more perspectives you can incorporate, the deeper you can analyze, and the closer you can get to the text.

That’s how the work delivers value back to society, and it’s what makes me proud of what this team has built.

Core Products And Features

When asked about NVivo AI Cloud and AURA, Barron detailed:

NVivo AI Cloud is our AI-native qualitative data analysis solution, and it’s powered by AURA, which is a family of AI agents built around how qualitative research is actually done.

AURA can set up a research project, follow proven research methodology, identify key topics across sources, and build and maintain a codebook as new data arrives.

What matters most is how it behaves.

Every AI suggestion is clearly marked, points back to the exact source data that generated it, and requires the researcher’s review and approval before it becomes part of the analytical record.

So the researcher stays in control of the analysis, and AURA takes on the labor-intensive work.

Solving The Trust Problem In AI-Assisted Research

When asked about the biggest challenges facing researchers as they adopt AI, Barron noted:

There’s real tension right now.

Researchers feel pressure to use AI to publish faster, but they also have to protect the accuracy and integrity of the research process.

A study has to hold up to scrutiny from institutional review boards, grant reporting requirements, and academic publication.

If you can’t show how a code or a theme was produced, that’s a problem, however fast you got there.

General-purpose AI tools can be impressive, but they often can’t show their reasoning.

We built NVivo AI Cloud so researchers don’t have to choose between speed and defensibility.

Technology Evolution

When discussing how Lumivero’s technology has evolved, Barron explained:

NVivo has been bringing structure to complex, unstructured data for more than 30 years, and that methodology is the foundation for everything we’re doing with AI.

We didn’t start from a generic AI model and look for a research use case.

We started from how qualitative researchers work and asked where AI can help without weakening the chain of evidence.

That’s why NVivo AI Cloud is AI-native and methodology-first, and why it extends what NVivo has always stood for rather than replacing it.

Who NVivo AI Cloud Is Built For

When asked about the researchers NVivo AI Cloud serves, Barron shared:

NVivo AI Cloud is built for social science and market researchers across industries, with a particular focus on academia, government, healthcare, and professional services.

These are all settings where findings get challenged and where the analysis has to be defensible.

Researchers in these fields are often working on questions that affect real people, from healthcare treatments to social issues.

They also tell us there are questions they once ruled out because the analysis would have taken too long.

With AI handling more of the heavy lifting, they can test more hypotheses and revisit those questions.

Competitive Differentiation

When asked what differentiates NVivo AI Cloud from other AI tools, Barron emphasized:

It comes down to auditability.

Every action AURA takes traces back to its source data and requires researcher sign-off, so there is no hidden reasoning, no hallucinated codes, and no loss of control over the analysis.

The other piece is the heritage.

It’s built on three decades of NVivo methodology, and the community around that, including researchers and methodologists, is a big part of why people trust it.

The result is not just faster analysis but analysis a researcher can stand behind.

Availability And Future Goals

When discussing availability and future goals, Barron concluded:

Individual researchers and students can buy NVivo AI Cloud starting October 6.

Teams and institutions can join the waitlist at lumivero.com/waitlist for access in the new year.

We’re also hosting Illuminate on October 6, a live launch event where people can see NVivo AI Cloud in action and explore where AI-enabled qualitative research is headed.

Over the longer term, we want to help researchers go deeper into their data and publish work they can stand behind, without ever trading rigor for efficiency.

That’s the standard we hold ourselves to as the field changes.
