Lyft Rolls Out ‘Ditch Your Car’ Pilot Program

  • Lyft has rolled out a new program called “Ditch Your Car,” which connects people who want to sell their car to Carvana and offers perks in the form of Lyft rides

Lyft has launched a new program that encourages people to get rid of their cars. This service could be beneficial for people who live in heavily populated downtown cities like Chicago, Los Angeles, and San Francisco where it can be expensive and inconvenient to own a car.

The “Ditch Your Car” pilot program will offer car owners with several perks for giving up their vehicles such as connecting them with the Carvana resale platform. And Lyft will also provide them with $250 in Lyft credits and 3 months of free Lyft Pink membership.

Lyft founders Logan Green and John Zimmer originally launched the company with the goal of building a transportation-as-a-service platform that is enabled by technology.

“Lyft launched 7 years ago with the goal of providing the world’s best transportation and reducing the need for personal vehicles. Since then, we’ve completed over one billion rides and challenged the way we view car ownership,” said Lyft in a blog post. “Last year, almost half of our riders said they use their cars less because of Lyft and 22% reported that owning a car has become less important. With the average cost of owning and operating a new vehicle reaching nearly $10,000 a year† (not including parking), these trends aren’t surprising.”

The first “Ditch Your Car” program launched last year. And Lyft encouraged over 150,000 riders to ditch their cars to 30 days. This helped reduced traffic congestion and greenhouse gas emission.

“To achieve a future in which cities are built around people instead of cars, we need to fundamentally change the way we think about personal car ownership and offer seamless ways to help decrease it,” added Lilly Shoup, senior director for transportation policy at Lyft via Fast Company.
