Philanthropist and author MacKenzie Scott will donate $640 million to 361 nonprofits through Yield Giving. On March 19, 2024, Yield Giving and Lever for Change announced the 361 awardees after conducting an Open Call for community-led and community-focused organizations that elevates the voices and opportunities of individuals and families of meager or modest means.
The Open Call received 6,353 applications and initially planned for 250 awards of $1 million each. And in the fall of 2023, organizations top-rated by their peers advanced to another round of review by an external Evaluation Panel recruited for experience relevant to the cause. Then, they went through a final round of due diligence.
The donor team ended up expanding the awardee pool and the award amount. And the 279 organizations in the top tier of scores received $2 million each, and the 82 organizations in the next tier received $1 million each.
Some of the awardees included ACLU of Alabama, All Square, Baltimore Tree Trust, Black Girl Ventures, Boys Hope Girls Hope of New York, Child Care Law Center, Colorado Fiscal Institute, Dallas Afterschool, Daya, Detroit Justice Center, EDGE New Jersey, Elevate Phoenix, Epilepsy Foundation of Texas, Franklin Food Bank, HER Cincinnati, Missouri Jobs with Justice, MPact Global Action, Nurses for Newborns, School Leader Lab, and Voice of Hope.
Since last December, Scott’s Yield Giving donated over $3.8 billion to 465 organizations over a period of nine months. Scott donated $436 million to Habitat for Humanity and $84.5 million to Girl Scouts of the USA.
