Xavier University of Louisiana has received a historic $38 million unrestricted donation from philanthropist MacKenzie Scott, marking the most significant private gift in the institution’s history. The contribution represents Scott’s second significant investment in Xavier after her $20 million gift in 2020, which recognized Xavier’s national significance as the only historically Black and Catholic university in the United States.

The new funding will play a central role in advancing priorities within Xavier’s Centennial Capital Campaign. Key areas of focus include affordability initiatives, expanded student support programs, and enhanced pathways for students to grow academically, socially, and professionally. University leaders emphasized that the unrestricted nature of the donation gives Xavier the flexibility to strengthen programs that most directly impact student success.

The gift concludes of Xavier’s Centennial year, a period marked by campus celebrations, alumni reunions, and national recognition for Xavier’s contributions to STEM fields, health sciences, the arts, and social justice. Alumni participation and philanthropic support have surged as the university looks ahead to its second century.

Xavier officials noted that Scott’s donation not only amplifies the momentum of the Centennial Campaign but also solidifies long-term efforts to advance research opportunities, strengthen institutional sustainability, and deepen community partnerships. The university stated that the gift will accelerate its mission to expand opportunities for students from diverse backgrounds and prepare future leaders committed to service and justice.
