Mandela Digital has received a $5 million investment from Datavault AI to support the development and planned launch of the Mandela Dollar, a proposed U.S. dollar-backed stablecoin. Datavault AI has begun deploying the committed capital and will also serve as Mandela Digital’s primary technology partner.
The funding will support stablecoin infrastructure, regulatory compliance, exchange integrations, liquidity planning and go-to-market initiatives.
Mandela Digital said the Mandela Dollar, known as MUSD, will be designed to maintain a one-to-one value with the U.S. dollar and expand access to dollar-denominated payments, remittances and financial services across Africa, Southeast Asia, Latin America and other markets.
The token remains under development and has not been launched on a blockchain or listed on an exchange. Mandela Digital has not authorized a token sale, presale, initial coin offering or similar transaction.
Stablecoins are digital assets designed to maintain a relatively stable value by referencing another asset, frequently the U.S. dollar. A fully backed dollar stablecoin generally seeks to hold reserves equal to the value of the tokens in circulation, although the specific reserve structure, redemption process and audit framework can differ significantly among issuers.
Mandela Digital said future disclosures will provide additional information about MUSD’s reserves, audits, governance and operating framework.
Datavault AI will provide its AI platforms, blockchain tokenization technologies, real-world asset frameworks and SanQtum encryption technology to support the planned issuance, redemption, compliance and on-chain transparency of MUSD.
On-chain transparency can allow users, auditors and other stakeholders to examine certain transaction and supply information recorded on a blockchain. However, blockchain records alone do not verify the value, ownership or availability of assets held outside the blockchain.
Mandela Digital will therefore need to establish reserve custody, auditing, compliance and redemption systems capable of supporting its one-to-one backing claim before MUSD becomes operational.
The initiative is positioning MUSD as infrastructure for people and businesses that have limited access to conventional banking services or stable dollar-denominated payment products.
Cross-border remittances can involve high fees, slow settlement times and limited availability, particularly in markets with fragmented banking infrastructure. Stablecoin-based systems may provide an alternative method for moving value, although adoption depends on regulation, liquidity, local payment connections and users’ ability to convert between digital assets and national currencies.
Mandela Digital also launched an official website that will serve as the primary information center for the initiative.
The site is expected to publish updates about the stablecoin framework, reserves, audits, governance, partnerships and educational resources.
The company has also opened applications for an Early Access Programme aimed at financial institutions and intergovernmental organizations.
The application period will remain open for 67 days, referencing the 67 years Nelson Mandela devoted to public service and the struggle for human rights, equality and social justice.
Mandela Digital describes itself as a U.S.-headquartered joint venture. The organization is using the Mandela name to connect the financial initiative with themes of economic inclusion and empowerment.
The company will need to navigate regulatory requirements affecting stablecoin issuance, anti-money laundering procedures, customer identification, reserve management and digital asset distribution across multiple jurisdictions.
Datavault AI trades on Nasdaq under the ticker symbol DVLT. The company said its technology will form a central part of MUSD’s planned operational infrastructure.
Mandela Digital cautioned the public that unauthorized tokens or websites claiming to represent MUSD may be fraudulent. It emphasized that the official Mandela Dollar has not yet been issued and that no public offering is underway.
