Manus: AI Platform Launches ‘My Computer’ To Turn Local Machines Into Autonomous Agents

Manus, the AI platform now part of Meta, has officially introduced “My Computer,” a new desktop capability that brings its AI agent from the cloud directly to users’ local machines. The announcement, published on the company’s blog, outlines a major shift in how AI systems can interact with personal computers, enabling direct access to local files, applications, and development environments.

Previously operating entirely in a cloud-based sandbox, Manus is now extending its functionality to users’ desktops through a dedicated application. This allows the AI agent to execute command-line instructions, analyze and edit files, and control local applications, effectively transforming a Mac or PC into a fully operational AI-powered workstation.

The company highlighted practical use cases such as organizing large volumes of unstructured files and automating repetitive administrative tasks. For example, Manus can categorize and sort thousands of photos into structured folders or rename hundreds of documents in a consistent format within minutes, significantly reducing manual workload.

Beyond file management, Manus emphasized the platform’s potential for software development. By leveraging command line tools available on a user’s machine, including programming environments like Python, Node.js, and Swift, the AI agent can build applications end-to-end. In one example, Manus was used to create a real-time translation and subtitle app on macOS entirely through terminal commands, handling coding, debugging, and packaging without manual intervention.

The system also enables users to utilize idle computing resources. Manus can tap into local GPUs to train machine learning models or run inference tasks, turning underused devices such as always-on desktops or Mac mini systems into persistent AI assistants capable of executing tasks remotely.

In addition, the platform integrates local and cloud workflows. Users can issue commands from anywhere, prompting Manus to access files stored on their home computer and complete actions such as sending documents via email. This creates a unified system that bridges local data with cloud-based services.

To address privacy and security concerns, Manus stated that all terminal commands require explicit user approval before execution. Users can choose to approve commands individually or allow trusted actions to run automatically, maintaining control over how the AI interacts with their system.

“My Computer” is available starting today for both macOS and Windows users through the Manus Desktop app, marking a significant step toward more autonomous, locally integrated AI agents.

KEY QUOTES:

“Through the Manus Desktop app, Manus executes command line instructions (CLI) in your computer’s terminal. This allows it to read, analyze, and edit local files, as well as launch and control your local applications.”
