MariaDB Reacquires SkySQL For Expanding Cloud And AI Platform

MariaDB announced the acquisition of SkySQL Inc., reclaiming its former subsidiary and the technology behind a cutting-edge, AI-powered, serverless database-as-a-service (DBaaS) platform. The move brings SkySQL’s advanced cloud-native capabilities back into the MariaDB portfolio, reinforcing its commitment to flexible deployment and innovation in cloud database services.

Initially developed by MariaDB and spun off in 2023, SkySQL has since evolved into a robust DBaaS offering, featuring agentic AI, serverless architecture, and multi-cloud support across AWS, Azure, and Google Cloud. With this acquisition, MariaDB Cloud will now incorporate SkySQL’s full capabilities, enabling developers to build scalable, AI-driven applications with minimal overhead.

MariaDB Cloud will also serve as a delivery vehicle for the MariaDB Enterprise Platform, the company’s flagship product known for high performance, security, clustering, and availability. Customers can now consume the platform as a fully managed cloud service, with enhanced support for vector search, semantic agents, and natural language query optimization.

The entire SkySQL team will join MariaDB, strengthening its engineering, product, support, and go-to-market functions with deep expertise in DBaaS. This acquisition follows MariaDB’s recent purchase of Galera Cluster in June 2025 and the January launch of a revamped MariaDB Enterprise Platform, which introduced open-source vector search capabilities.

MariaDB’s renewed momentum stems from its acquisition by K1 Investment Management in September 2024 and the appointment of Rohit de Souza as CEO.
