Billionaire entrepreneur Mark Cuban has purchased the domain name Democracy.com for more than $300,000, according to The New York Times. Cuban — who is known as being the owner of the Dallas Mavericks NBA team and as an investor on the TV show Shark Tank — does not have any specific plans for the domain name. Cuban mainly bought the domain name to prevent it from being abused.

The sale was made through Heritage Auctions and it was orchestrated by Talmage Cooley. Cooley had originally launched Democracy.com in 2012 while attending the Harvard Kennedy School with a goal of connecting candidates and civic programs with citizen supporters.

Cooley had emailed Cuban about the auction a few days before it was expected to close. Cuban made an offer a few minutes later.

The New York Times said that the minimum bid was set at $300,000 and Cuban paid more than that. The exact amount was undisclosed.

“I’m glad that somebody in the U.S. bought it, as opposed to a Russian counter-democracy organization,” said Cooley in an interview with The New York Times.

Cuban himself has expressed an interest in politics in the past. Earlier this year, Cuban said that if his family gave him permission to run for president, then he would do so as an independent. Well, at least Cuban got to play the role of president in the movie “Sharknado 3: Oh Hell No!”
