Mark Cuban’s Investment Group Purchases Minority Stake In Athletics

An investment group led by Harbinger Sports Partners, which includes former Dallas Mavericks majority owner Mark Cuban, has purchased a minority stake in the Athletics ahead of the team’s planned move to Las Vegas in 2028. The announcement did not disclose the percentage of the team acquired.

Cuban, who retains a minority stake in the Mavericks, serves as general partner and president of the Atlanta-based investment group. Atlanta Falcons minority owner Rashaun Williams is the group’s founder and chief investment officer; co-founder and CEO Steve Cannon is vice chairman of AMB Sports and Entertainment; and managing partner Jonathan Mariner is the former chief financial officer of Major League Baseball. Together, the group brings a combination of experience across professional sports ownership, stadium and entertainment operations, and league-level finance.

The investment comes as the Athletics prepare for a significant transition. Athletics majority owner John Fisher is overseeing construction of a $2 billion, 33,000-capacity domed stadium on the Las Vegas Strip, a project intended to give the franchise a permanent home after years of uncertainty over its location. In the interim, the team is currently playing at a Triple-A ballpark in West Sacramento, California, a temporary arrangement while the Las Vegas stadium is completed. The addition of Harbinger Sports Partners as a minority investor gives the franchise new financial backing and industry expertise as it works through this transitional period ahead of the planned 2028 move.
