Mayer Brown Adds Justin Hewett To Expand Leveraged Finance And Private Credit In Houston

Mayer Brown has added Justin Hewett as a partner in its Global Leveraged Finance and Private Capital Group in Houston, continuing the firm’s expansion of its Texas finance practice and strengthening its capabilities across private credit and complex lending transactions. Hewett joins Mayer Brown from DLA Piper.

He represents private credit funds, commercial banks and other institutional lenders in a wide range of domestic and cross-border financing transactions.

His practice includes growth capital financings, acquisition financings, corporate lending, restructurings and workouts, giving him experience across both new-money transactions and situations involving stressed or changing capital structures.

Hewett also advises clients on more complex aspects of financing arrangements, including collateral structures and intercreditor agreements.

These issues can become especially important in leveraged and sponsor-backed transactions where multiple lenders or different layers of debt have claims on the same borrower or collateral.

His cross-border experience includes advising on collateral arrangements involving assets and entities in multiple jurisdictions, which can require coordination across different legal systems and security regimes.

Hewett also works on financings that incorporate equity-linked features such as convertible debt, warrants and preferred equity.

These structures can give lenders or investors additional economic participation alongside traditional debt returns and are increasingly used in growth capital, private credit and other bespoke financing situations.

The appointment adds to Mayer Brown’s capabilities as private credit funds and other alternative lenders continue taking a larger role in corporate and sponsor-backed finance.

Private credit has expanded significantly as borrowers increasingly look beyond traditional syndicated bank markets for customized financing solutions.

Direct lenders can often provide more flexible structures, larger hold sizes and negotiated terms tailored to individual transactions.

That growth has also increased demand for lawyers with experience across leveraged lending, collateral packages, intercreditor arrangements and hybrid debt-equity structures.

Hewett’s addition strengthens Mayer Brown’s ability to advise lenders throughout the financing lifecycle, from underwriting and documentation through amendments, restructurings and workouts.

His arrival also builds on the firm’s broader investment in its Houston and Texas finance platform, a market with substantial activity across private equity, energy, infrastructure and corporate lending.

By adding Hewett to its Global Leveraged Finance and Private Capital Group, Mayer Brown is expanding the senior experience available to private credit funds, banks and institutional lenders pursuing increasingly complex financing transactions.
