Mayer Brown has expanded its Global Investigations & White Collar Defense practice with the appointment of Albert “BJ” Stieglitz as a partner in Washington, D.C. Stieglitz joins the firm from Alston & Bird, bringing nearly 13 years of experience at the U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ), including senior leadership positions in the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section. His appointment strengthens Mayer Brown’s capabilities in domestic and international investigations, government enforcement defense, and corporate compliance.
Stieglitz advises companies and individuals on internal investigations, government enforcement actions, litigation, and compliance matters involving securities fraud, the Foreign Corrupt Practices Act (FCPA), and complex cross-border issues. His experience spans multiple industries, including healthcare, life sciences, energy, retail, financial services, manufacturing, private equity, technology, and transportation.
Before entering private practice, Stieglitz spent nearly 13 years at the DOJ, where he held senior leadership roles in the Criminal Division’s Fraud Section. During his government career, he led and oversaw significant fraud and FCPA investigations, tried multiple federal criminal cases to verdict, and twice received the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service.
His international experience includes serving as the DOJ’s first dual secondee to the United Kingdom’s Serious Fraud Office and Financial Conduct Authority. In that position, he led investigations involving various UK offenses, negotiated two UK deferred prosecution agreements, and advised on transatlantic enforcement matters and relationships between government agencies.
Stieglitz’s experience on both sides of government enforcement proceedings provides Mayer Brown with additional capabilities in representing corporations and individuals facing complex regulatory and criminal investigations. His background in U.S. and international enforcement is particularly relevant to multinational businesses navigating investigations across multiple jurisdictions.
The appointment also supports Mayer Brown’s continued investment in its global investigations and white-collar defense capabilities. The firm advises major corporations, investment funds, financial institutions, and individuals on complex legal disputes, regulatory enforcement matters, and corporate transactions.
