McLaren Automotive has announced a £500 million investment program to expand its UK manufacturing, engineering and product development operations as the supercar company prepares to broaden its lineup, including the launch of a newly confirmed performance SUV.
The investment forms part of a larger commitment from McLaren shareholder L’IMAD, the sovereign investor of the Government of Abu Dhabi, and is designed to create a more integrated British operation spanning vehicle design, engineering, testing, advanced manufacturing and production.
McLaren plans to increase vehicle production through a new UK assembly facility, ensuring that its next generation of vehicles, including the performance SUV, is built in Britain.
The investment will also bring powertrain design and manufacturing in-house for the first time in McLaren Automotive’s history.
The company plans to begin with two new engines and transmissions supporting its hybrid powertrain strategy, building on its earlier use of hybrid technology in vehicles including the McLaren P1.
McLaren will also expand its Production Centre in Woking and its carbon-fiber manufacturing and research operations at the McLaren Composites Technology Centre in South Yorkshire.
The company recently opened a design and innovation center at the McLaren Creation Centre in Bicester as well as a testing and vehicle development facility in the Midlands. Those locations will operate alongside Woking and South Yorkshire as part of a broader integrated UK footprint.
The investment underpins McLaren’s effort to develop a broader portfolio around its traditional supercar business.
The company said it intends to enter additional vehicle categories while maintaining deliberate segmentation intended to protect brand positioning, desirability and customer loyalty. The newly announced performance SUV will be one of the first major examples of that expansion.
McLaren expects the program to create at least 1,000 direct and indirect UK jobs by 2032 while protecting existing positions. Its British manufacturing workforce is expected to double, supported by new apprenticeship programs.
The company also estimates that its investment could support as many as 3,000 additional jobs across the UK supply chain.
The program will strengthen McLaren’s capabilities in carbon fiber, lightweight engineering and advanced manufacturing while keeping important intellectual property and production expertise in the UK.
McLaren Automotive produces ultra-high-performance vehicles from its Woking operation, with products currently sold in more than 40 markets around the world.
