Medius provides cloud-based business spend management software that automates accounts payable—from invoice capture and approvals to payments and spend analytics—so companies can streamline the source-to-pay process. Pulse 2.0 interviewed Medius Chief Revenue Officer Mary Flynn Barton to gain a deeper understanding of the company.
Mary Flynn Barton’s Background

Could you tell me more about your background? Barton said:
“Prior to my career in the software industry, I worked in sales and tax consulting, helping large companies understand and predict sales and use tax across multiple states and jurisdictions. Flipping through thousands of invoices in the basement of a manufacturing plant helped me to understand how hard it is for companies to know what they buy, how much that costs and how to optimize spend. It sparked my interest in thinking about how B2B suppliers and buyers interact and how much value can be created in those interactions. My career eventually led me to Coupa Software where I started Coupa’s first global customer success team then moved into various roles in the sales organization. In 2021, I went on to serve as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO) at iDonate, overseeing all sales, marketing, and customer success functions.”
“Today, I serve as CRO for Medius, a leading global provider of AP automation and Spend Management solutions.”
“As CRO at Medius, I lead our global sales organization and global revenue operations function, oversee all revenue-generating activities within the organization, as well as the development and implementation of our overall revenue strategy. I view my role as CRO at Medius as twofold, serving both our global customers as well as being a source of guidance and mentorship for our internal Medius team. Our customers entrust us to support them in making their businesses better and ensuring that their investments are getting them the value they expect and need from our solutions. This goal remains at the core of our work at Medius, maintaining our continued promise to equip finance teams with the right solutions to be at their most successful – including to optimize and transform their spending, create more value and reduce risk, as well as shaping their overall financial futures.”
“At the same time, an equally important aspect of my role as CRO is the continued support we provide as leaders to our internal teams. Making the jobs of our internal teams easier and motivating them to do things better in their roles than we as leaders could have done ourselves.”
Favorite Memory
What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Barton reflected:
“There are so many great memories over the last three years. Seeing our customers lives improve because of the efficiency the solution provides is a highlight. I have countless stories of AP Directors and Controllers who get to spend more time with their families, get to their kids’ sporting events, or take a well-deserved vacation because the Medius solution eliminates manual work, helps close the books faster and generally improves processes. Internally, I have watched so many of our people grow personally and professionally. We pride ourselves on promoting internally. One of our top salespeople started with us as a BDR and two years later is winning awards. We have many people that started at Medius as interns and now run large areas of the business – it is inspiring to see long-time Medius people collaborate with new joiners to come up with innovative solutions.”
Core Products
What are the company’s core products and features? Barton explained:
“Medius offers a comprehensive suite of Accounts Payable (AP) Automation and Spend Management solutions, serving global customers in industries across manufacturing, transport and logistics, retail, construction, food & beverage, healthcare, and CPG. While we’ve long used machine learning and neutral networks within invoice processing, Medius Copilot and Medius Supplier Conversations are two AI agents leading to quicker invoice approvals by fielding inbound questions and requests from suppliers without direct involvement from AP teams.”
“Medius also continues to launch new tools directly targeting the top concerns and priorities of finance teams – including fraud detection and prevention. According to our 2024 Financial Census report, which surveyed more than 1500 senior finance executives across the US and UK, 53% reported having been targeted by attempted deepfake scamming attacks, and 43% admitted they have fallen victim to an attack. With Medius Fraud & Risk Detection, this solution works to detect both anomalies and risk factors leveraging AI across the invoice lifecycle – ensuring teams are protected against internal and external fraud. From fake invoices to duplicate payments, Medius Fraud & Risk Detection equips AP teams with the visibility they need to quickly detect potential fraud and take immediate action.”
“From expense management to procurement to fraud, Medius is dedicated to supporting the forefront needs of finance teams, helping organizations optimize financial processes, reduce risks, and improve overall visibility and control for the long term.”
Challenges Faced
Have you faced any challenges in your sector of work recently? Barton acknowledged:
“Shifting tariffs and regulatory changes are driving up costs and creating financial unpredictability for our customers. As a provider of spend management solutions, Medius is in a position where we can help our customers, including by helping them analyze their spend data. They can also offset tariff impacts with smarter sourcing strategies. We provide education resources, webinars, and advisory services to help our clients maximize the value of their solutions.”
Evolution Of The Company’s Technology
How has the company’s technology evolved since launching? Barton noted:
“Medius continues to stay vigilant on emerging technologies with the potential to make our customers more efficient, reduce risk and improve operations. Amid ongoing talent retention challenges within the finance sector, our 2024 Census report found that 60% of US finance professionals plan to leave the sector. Repetitive, monotonous tasks keep finance teams from focusing on more strategic and pressing activity. In response, Medius has cultivated a suite of AI-powered solutions – from AP automation to expense management to Fraud & Risk Detection – to streamline processes, reduce the risk of fraud, improve labor productivity, as well as reduce the risk of human error.”
Significant Milestones
What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones? Barton cited:
“From expansions of Medius’ headquarters and the continued growth of our internal team to the successes we’ve continuously delivered for our customers, Medius continues to reach significant company milestones. In 2022, we announced the acquisition of US-based invoice payments provider, OnPay Solutions, which has enabled us to not only integrate payment processing directly into our source-to-pay platform, but also strengthen the company’s anomaly and fraud detection capabilities as well as enhancing our customers’ overall operational efficiency.”
“Fast-forward to July 2023, Medius announced the acquisition of Expensya, a global expense management software company, further bolstering Medius’ strategy to be the leading provider of AP automation solutions. That same year, we also opened our new headquarters in Jacksonville, FL, creating 15 new local jobs across finance and sales teams. In 2024, we launched Medius Copilot and Medius Supplier Conversations, our two revolutionary AI agents that have been instrumental in more accurate and efficient invoice approvals and on-time payments. As we reflect on the past five months in 2025, Medius continues to lead on a global scale, making continued advancements with the overall goal of supporting our customers and setting them up for continued success.”
Customer Success Stories
Can you share any specific customer success stories? Barton highlighted:
“Among one of our notable customer success stories can be best seen through our work with Silver Eagle Distributors, one of the largest beer distributors in the United States. Prior to working with Medius, the company faced ongoing challenges with a manual, paper-based AP invoicing system, which led to a lack of spend visibility, and a heavy review process for deviating invoices. Since partnering with Medius, we’ve enabled Silver Eagle to automate the matching of invoices, provide transparency into who holds an invoice and for how long, and also helped them harness their data for more accurate and timely financial reporting. Silver Eagle now processes 150,000 invoices per year with 79% of them being touchless, and they’ve also reduced their approval lead time to just 18 hours.”
“‘With more than 90% of all AP invoices now automated and essentially touchless, we now have control over our true financial picture. Everyone is thrilled – the AP team, the business, our suppliers. The outcome is absolutely remarkable’ – Elise Byrd, AP Manager, Silver Eagle”
Differentiation From The Competition
What differentiates the company from its competition? Barton affirmed:
“Medius AI has transformed the APA experience for users. We have revolutionized onboarding with an intelligent onboarding buddy and empowered users to make quick, confident decisions with context-sensitive conversational support. We can identify anomalies and call out risks from trend analysis, while non PO invoices can be auto-coded and processed after just 2 invoices. And we can respond to supplier email enquiries without the need for AP involvement.”
“Medius excels at direct material invoice automation, leveraging AI to provide unrivalled levels of automated PO matching in complex environments, connecting large volumes of invoice line items to corresponding PO lines and goods receipts across many documents. This enables high touchless processing rates, reducing manual intervention and errors. Medius achieves this efficiency without requiring suppliers to change their invoicing methods, ensuring smooth and uninterrupted.”
“Our AI-driven capture technology is a patent-pending, cloud-based, non-template solution that stands out by delivering the fastest time to value. Fully integrated and native to our suite, Capture leverages our massive cloud data set of hundreds of millions of historical invoices and billions of user corrective actions to deliver amazing line-level details and accuracy, regardless of the complexity of the invoice.”
“It’s in Medius’ ability to deliver against the expectation of AP Automation. AP is inherently complex and our software is purpose-built for that complexity. Our software quality also helps in our post-sale service because we can spend more of our resources helping our customers achieve their touchless processing goals. Our high software quality, coupled with an obsession with touchless invoice processing, directly impacts customer efficiency, satisfaction, and value from Medius. Medius Elevate is a service that ensures continuous improvement on those metrics that drive customer value. Overall the customer experience strategy is about partnering with customers for their success, moving the needle on the metrics that drive value, therefore offering a truly differentiated customer experience.”
