MedSpeed has acquired Am-Tran, a California-based provider of last-mile logistics services. Financial terms of the transaction were not disclosed. The acquisition expands MedSpeed’s operations across the San Francisco Bay Area, Sacramento, Fresno and Los Angeles. It also strengthens the company’s presence in one of the largest healthcare markets in the United States.
Am-Tran provides transportation services for time-sensitive and critical materials. Its addition supports MedSpeed’s strategy of building a broader same-day logistics network dedicated to healthcare organizations.
Healthcare logistics involves transporting items such as laboratory specimens, pharmaceuticals, medical equipment, supplies and other materials between hospitals, clinics, laboratories, pharmacies and related facilities. Reliability and delivery timing can be particularly important when materials affect testing, treatment or patient care.
MedSpeed operates one of the country’s largest healthcare-focused same-day logistics networks. The company has approximately 3,500 employees and serves healthcare organizations across 39 states.
Its network includes more than 100 hub operations. MedSpeed’s customer base includes 10 of the country’s 20 largest health systems, according to the company.
MedSpeed positions transportation as an integrated part of healthcare operations rather than a collection of separate courier services. Its model is designed to centralize logistics, reduce duplicated routes, use network scale more efficiently and improve control over medical material movement.
The combination with Am-Tran will add regional expertise, employees and customer relationships in California. MedSpeed expects the businesses to benefit from shared technology, operational capabilities and experience managing critical healthcare deliveries.
Am-Tran President Jim Hobbs said the companies share a focus on employees, customer service and dependable delivery. The acquisition is also expected to create additional opportunities for Am-Tran’s workforce and customers through MedSpeed’s national platform.
The transaction represents another stage in MedSpeed’s expansion following an investment from Water Street Healthcare Partners in 2024. Water Street is a strategic investor focused on healthcare businesses.
