Medtronic announced the completion of its acquisition of Scientia Vascular, a privately held medical device company based in Salt Lake City. The transaction is valued at $550 million, subject to customary adjustments, with the potential for additional earn-out and milestone payments.
Founded by chief technology officer John Lippert, Scientia Vascular has developed guidewires and catheter technologies designed to improve physician access during complex neurovascular procedures. The company employs approximately 310 people and has focused on products that help physicians navigate the highly complex anatomy involved in treating conditions such as stroke and aneurysms.
Scientia’s portfolio of access technologies will be integrated with Medtronic’s existing neurovascular product lineup, expanding the company’s ability to support physicians throughout the procedural workflow. The combined platform is intended to simplify neurovascular procedures and improve procedural efficiency.
Stroke remains the third leading cause of death and the leading cause of disability worldwide. Because cerebral vasculature is highly tortuous, physicians often face challenges in reaching the site of an occlusion or aneurysm. Scientia’s technologies are designed to improve navigability and enable faster and more reliable access to treatment sites.
The acquisition represents another strategic move by Medtronic to strengthen leadership positions across its core businesses and pursue high-growth opportunities that complement its portfolio.
According to the company, the transaction is expected to be minimally dilutive to adjusted earnings per share in fiscal year 2027 and accretive thereafter.
Medtronic’s Neurovascular business offers products for multiple neurovascular conditions and seeks to advance therapies aimed at reducing the burden of stroke and other neurovascular diseases. Headquartered in Galway, Ireland, Medtronic employs more than 95,000 people and operates in over 150 countries.
