Meta is building what could become the world’s largest artificial intelligence data center campus in rural Louisiana, a project known internally as Hyperion. According to a Bloomberg feature, the development has rapidly transformed Richland Parish’s economy, infrastructure, politics, and culture as CEO Mark Zuckerberg pushes aggressively to expand the company’s AI computing capabilities, according to Bloomberg.
The project reportedly began after Zuckerberg told employees in 2023 that he wanted Meta to assemble a cluster of 1 million Nvidia GPUs to power next-generation AI systems. That goal triggered a search for massive amounts of electricity and land capable of supporting hyperscale infrastructure. Louisiana ultimately emerged as a prime location due to its available land, water access, and energy development support.
Bloomberg reported that the Hyperion campus has expanded significantly beyond its original footprint. The Franklin family has already sold more than 1,700 acres for the project, bringing the overall development close to 4,000 acres. Meta is expected to spend more than $200 billion on the broader initiative, according to a person familiar with the matter cited by Bloomberg. The site is projected to ultimately reach approximately 5 gigawatts of computing capacity, a level of power consumption comparable to New York City’s electricity use on a winter day.
To support those energy demands, utility provider Entergy plans to construct multiple gas-fired power plants and major transmission infrastructure tied directly to the data center. Bloomberg reported that 10 gas plants are planned overall, while Reuters and other reports noted that Entergy and Meta revised agreements to expand infrastructure investments while promising long-term customer savings.
The project has generated substantial political and economic momentum throughout northeast Louisiana. Bloomberg noted that local officials quickly supported the proposal due to the region’s economic struggles and desire for investment opportunities. The company pledged to begin partial operations in 2028, promising 300 full-time jobs by 2031 and 500 by 2035, with wages significantly above state averages.
The development has also triggered concerns around environmental impact, housing inflation, and public subsidies. Reports indicated that Meta could receive billions in tax incentives connected to the campus. Critics have raised concerns about water usage, fossil fuel expansion, and the broader social effects of rapid industrialization in a historically agricultural region.
Bloomberg described the project as a defining example of how the global AI boom is reshaping local economies and accelerating the race among major technology companies to secure energy, infrastructure, and computing power.
