Meta Plans To Buy 350,000 Nvidia H100 GPUs By The End Of The Year

According to an Instagram post from Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the company plans to buy a substantial amount of Nvidia hardware by the end of 2024 to support its AI initiatives. Zuckerberg discussed a goal to ramp up an open-source artificial general intelligence platform that would be able to support productivity, wearables, and digital assistants.

Nvidia’s H100 orders were mostly driven by Meta and Microsoft last year. This additional order will keep Meta as one of Nvidia’s largest customers.

This AI infrastructure is necessary for Meta to build a complete artificial general intelligence (AGI) to accelerate its capabilities. And Meta plans to responsibly develop this new AI model as open-source product to drive innovation.

However, Meta’s high demands along with orders from other large cmopanies have also driven up larger lead times for the H100. It is believed that the lead times now have a wait time of over 36 months.

One of the reasons why there is high demand for the H100 is due to its high computing power and speed. The H100 is around 30 times faster than the Nvidia A100. One of the devices that Meta builds requiring a large amount of computing power is Ray-Ban’s smart glasses, which are powered by Meta.
