Joe and Julie Serra have made a $10 million commitment to Michigan State University’s FOR SPARTA initiative, marking the largest gift their family has made to MSU and extending a relationship with the university that dates back nearly four decades.

The gift will support Spartan football, with Michigan State planning to direct the funding toward improvements at Spartan Stadium.

The commitment comes as Michigan State Athletics moves forward under Vice President and Director of Athletics Dan Bartholomae and continues investing in facilities, student-athlete resources and the overall experience surrounding its athletic programs.

Spartan Stadium has been a central part of the Serras’ relationship with Michigan State, and the family said the investment reflects both that personal connection and its confidence in the future direction of Spartan Athletics.

Julie Serra is a Michigan State alumna and retired kindergarten teacher who has remained active in the Flint-area community.

Joe Serra is chairman of Fenton-based Serra Automotive, a family business founded by his father, Albert Serra, in 1973. Serra Automotive has grown into one of the 10 largest privately held retail automotive groups in the United States.

Joe Serra also serves on Michigan State President Kevin M. Guskiewicz’s Green and White Council, where business and community leaders work with university leadership on initiatives aimed at preparing students for their careers and strengthening Michigan’s economy.

The Serra family’s philanthropic relationship with Michigan State began in 1989.

Their new commitment will support FOR SPARTA, Michigan State Athletics’ $1 billion fundraising initiative focused on improving athletic facilities, enhancing the student-athlete experience and expanding opportunities across the department.

FOR SPARTA is also aligned with Michigan State’s broader $4 billion Uncommon Will, Far Better World campaign.

The $10 million commitment is expected to support future enhancements at Spartan Stadium, giving the athletic department additional resources to invest in a venue that serves student-athletes, fans, alumni and the broader Michigan State community.

Michigan State said the contribution also creates additional momentum for FOR SPARTA as the university seeks further philanthropic support for the long-term development of its athletic programs and facilities.
