Microchip Technology acquired VORAGO Technologies, adding radiation-hardened microcontrollers, microprocessors, and proprietary process technology to its aerospace, defense, and space portfolio. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Microchip said the transaction is not expected to have a material impact on its consolidated financial results.
Austin-based VORAGO develops radiation-hardened and radiation-tolerant microcontrollers and microprocessors for applications that must operate in extreme environments.
The acquisition also gives Microchip access to VORAGO’s patented HARDSIL process technology.
HARDSIL is designed to reduce the time and cost required to develop radiation-hardened products.
The technology can also increase radiation tolerance in existing products without requiring a complete redesign.
Microchip expects the acquisition to expand its ability to serve defense systems, satellites, and other space-based applications.
VORAGO’s team also adds specialized radiation-hardening expertise that Microchip plans to leverage across its broader semiconductor portfolio.
The acquisition comes as investment in defense and commercial space systems continues to increase.
KEY QUOTES:
“From terrestrial defense systems to satellite and space-based platforms, our aerospace and defense customers are designing systems that must operate reliably in increasingly harsh and complex environments.”
“The acquisition of VORAGO strengthens our ability to support development in these demanding markets and reinforces our commitment to investing in technologies that align with our long-term growth strategy.”
Steve Sanghi, CEO and President of Microchip Technology
