Microsoft announced a major expansion of its partnership with Thailand, committing more than $1 billion between 2026 and 2028 to develop cloud and AI infrastructure across the country. The investment, unveiled following a meeting in Bangkok between Vice Chair and President Brad Smith and Prime Minister Anutin Charnvirakul, represents one of the company’s largest regional infrastructure commitments in Southeast Asia.
The initiative is part of Microsoft’s broader strategy to advance national growth and competitiveness through AI adoption, with a focus on expanding access to cloud technologies, strengthening cybersecurity, and accelerating workforce readiness. The company said the investment will support ongoing operations in Thailand while helping scale AI adoption across industries.
A central component of the plan is the buildout of new cloud and AI data center infrastructure designed to meet Microsoft’s global standards for performance, reliability, and sustainability. The company emphasized the use of green energy and water-positive practices as part of the infrastructure rollout, alongside partnerships with leading Thai organizations to support development and long-term operations.
Microsoft is structuring the investment around three core priorities: technology, trust, and talent. The technology pillar focuses on delivering world-class digital infrastructure accessible to businesses and institutions nationwide. The trust pillar centers on building secure, sovereign cloud capabilities aligned with Thailand’s regulatory frameworks, enabling organizations to maintain control over their data while scaling AI adoption. The talent pillar aims to expand AI skills training across the workforce, educators, and broader society.
The announcement builds on an ongoing collaboration between Microsoft and the Royal Thai Government that began in 2023, including a landmark memorandum of understanding and multiple high-level engagements with company leadership such as CEO Satya Nadella. Since then, the partnership has focused on digital transformation, policy development, and workforce upskilling initiatives.
Microsoft said its efforts have already helped more than 2 million people in Thailand acquire AI-related skills over the past two years. The company is expanding these programs through partnerships with government agencies, including initiatives to train and certify workers, modernize education systems, and provide AI-focused learning platforms nationwide.
The investment also includes collaboration with policymakers and institutions to strengthen Thailand’s legal and governance frameworks for AI. This includes supporting initiatives that use AI to modernize legal analysis and improve alignment with international standards, as well as contributing expertise to help shape responsible AI regulation.
As part of the broader ecosystem development, Microsoft is working with both local and international partners to create long-term economic value, including job creation, knowledge transfer, and the development of technical capabilities within Thailand’s business landscape.
The move aligns with Thailand’s ambition to position itself as a regional hub for digital innovation and AI in Southeast Asia, as well as Microsoft’s global strategy of forming national-level partnerships to accelerate AI adoption and economic growth.
