Microsoft: Acquisition Of Fintool Expands AI Capabilities For Financial Research And Microsoft 365

Microsoft has acquired Fintool, an artificial intelligence startup focused on automating qualitative financial analysis, as part of its strategy to enhance productivity tools for knowledge workers within Microsoft 365.

Fintool, founded in San Francisco by Nicolas Bustamante and Edouard Godfrey, developed AI agents capable of analyzing earnings calls, reading financial filings, synthesizing research, and surfacing investment insights that traditionally required hours of manual work. The platform gained traction among professional investors across hedge funds, asset managers, and investment banks.

In early 2026, the company launched Fintool V5, introducing a fully agentic experience in which AI autonomously generates financial outputs such as discounted cash flow models in Excel, earnings presentations in PowerPoint, and research memos in Word. The acquisition reflects growing demand for integrating advanced AI workflows directly into enterprise productivity software.

Microsoft plans to incorporate Fintool’s technology and expertise into its Office and Microsoft 365 ecosystem, with a focus on enhancing capabilities for financial services professionals while expanding use cases across other industries. The move aligns with Microsoft’s broader push to embed AI-driven automation and insights into everyday work tools.

The Fintool team is expected to join Microsoft, where leadership will focus on advancing product development within the Office platform. The integration will leverage Microsoft’s scale and distribution to bring Fintool’s capabilities to a wider base of global users.

The acquisition also highlights a broader industry shift toward applying AI not only to quantitative analysis but also to qualitative research workflows, enabling faster and more comprehensive decision-making across financial markets.
