Microsoft has formally announced a major restructuring of its Copilot and artificial intelligence leadership, consolidating its Copilot efforts while shifting greater emphasis toward building advanced AI models.

The changes were confirmed in an official Microsoft blog post published March 17, 2026, which included internal communications from CEO Satya Nadella and Microsoft AI chief Mustafa Suleyman outlining the company’s new structure and strategic direction.

As part of the reorganization, Microsoft is combining its commercial and consumer Copilot teams into a single unified organization spanning four pillars: Copilot experience, Copilot platform, Microsoft 365 applications, and AI models. The move is designed to transform Copilot from a collection of products into a more integrated system.

Jacob Andreou has been appointed executive vice president to lead the Copilot experience across both consumer and commercial segments. He will oversee design, product, growth, and engineering, reporting directly to Nadella.

At the same time, Mustafa Suleyman will shift his focus more heavily toward advancing Microsoft’s AI model development, particularly its long-term “superintelligence” efforts. The company emphasized that progress at the model layer will be foundational to its future products and competitiveness.

Other senior leaders, including Ryan Roslansky, Perry Clarke, and Charles Lamanna, will oversee Microsoft 365 applications and the Copilot platform, forming a broader Copilot leadership team alongside Andreou and Suleyman.

Microsoft said the restructuring reflects a broader industry shift as AI evolves from simple assistants into systems capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks across applications and workflows. The company is aiming to align its organizational structure more closely with its product architecture to deliver more cohesive AI-powered experiences.

The announcement underscores Microsoft’s increasing focus on building proprietary, high-performance AI models while continuing to integrate them across its software ecosystem.
