- T-Mobile announced that president and COO Mike Sievert is going to succeed John Legere as CEO on May 1, 2020
T-Mobile has announced that president and COO Mike Sievert is going to succeed John Legere as CEO on May 1, 2020. That is the date in which Legere’s contract expires. Legere has been credited with reviving the T-Mobile brand by spearheading a number of unique product launches that differentiated the company from the other major telecommunications players.
For example, Legere pushed unlimited wireless plans at a time when the other carriers had data caps. And under Legere’s leadership, T-Mobile offered to pay the termination fees for customers who switched to T-Mobile.
Legere originally became CEO of T-Mobile in 2012. And now he is focused on closing T-Mobile’s pending $26 billion acquisition of Sprint as the leadership role transitions to Sievert. Legere will remain a board member at T-Mobile going forward.
During the T-Mobile and Sprint merger announcement, the companies said that Legere was going to lead the combined company as CEO while Sievert would be President and COO. Once the deal goes through, then Sievert would likely be the CEO of the combined company.
Here are some of Legere’s tweets announcing the news:
‼️ I’ve got some important news! On May 1, I’ll be handing the magenta CEO reigns over to @SievertMike as my successor. This move has been under development for a long time and I couldn’t be more confident in the future of @TMobile under his leadership.

‼️You’ve heard me joke that he’s “my son,” but in reality, since I hired him in 2012, @SievertMike’s been my mentee, my secret weapon and my friend. In our time we’ve launched 16 #uncarrier moves, shifted an archaic industry for consumers and wreaked havoc on the competition. pic.twitter.com/7MyX4i1vjd

‼️ I’m telling you, @SievertMike is absolutely the right choice to be the next CEO of @TMobile. I know he’ll take what we’ve done for the past 7 years and supercharge it! It’s #uncarrier way!! And remember, #WeWontStop pic.twitter.com/8P6CYSEFnk

It is unknown what Legere will be doing next. There were rumors that the struggling office rental company WeWork wanted to hire him as CEO, but Legere denied having talks with the company.
In a tweet, Legere said that this decision has “been under development for a long time.”
