Milbank Adds Former O’Melveny Tax Chair Alex Anderson As New York Partner

Milbank has added Alex Anderson as a partner in its New York Tax Group, bringing in a veteran transactional and restructuring tax lawyer who most recently served as chair of the tax practice at O’Melveny & Myers.

Anderson advises clients on U.S. federal income tax matters arising from complex transactions, restructurings and financings.

His practice includes both debtor- and creditor-side restructurings inside and outside Chapter 11, debt and equity offerings and secured and unsecured financing transactions.

His experience also extends to securitizations across a wide range of asset classes.

Those transactions have included leased aircraft and aircraft engines as well as intellectual property and income-producing assets connected with music, film and oil and gas interests.

Anderson also advises on strategic and private equity mergers and acquisitions, including tax planning around post-acquisition integration.

Other areas of his practice include alternative investment fund formation and transactions across the entertainment, sports and media industries.

Representative matters have included advising term lenders, corporate debtors and investment firms in major Chapter 11 proceedings and restructurings, private equity sponsors on acquisitions and clients involved in significant aviation-sector transactions.

The addition gives Milbank more senior tax capacity as the firm expands across several transactional practices.

Milbank specifically cited growth across real estate, investment funds and private equity as areas creating greater demand for sophisticated tax advice.

Complex transactions in those markets frequently involve questions about financing structures, asset ownership, fund structures and cross-border tax treatment, making tax planning a central component of deal execution.

Anderson’s restructuring background also complements Milbank’s work across leveraged finance, private credit and financial restructuring.

Restructuring transactions can generate unusually complicated tax issues because companies may be modifying or eliminating debt, transferring assets or changing ownership structures as part of a broader recapitalization.

His experience advising both debtors and creditors gives Milbank additional capabilities on multiple sides of those transactions.

The hire follows Milbank’s recent addition of Stuart Alter as another partner in the Tax Group, reflecting the firm’s effort to deepen the practice during a period of broader expansion.

Anderson earned his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School and his bachelor’s degree from Boston College.

He joins a Milbank platform that handles large-scale transactions across private equity, finance, restructuring, capital markets, investment funds and other areas where tax structuring can materially influence transaction economics.

His arrival also strengthens the firm’s New York presence in a market where alternative asset managers, private equity sponsors and financial institutions increasingly require tax advice spanning multiple transaction types.
