Mitsui & Co.’s Innovation & Corporate Development segment generated ¥65.2 billion of profit during the first quarter of fiscal 2027, reaching 93% of its ¥70 billion full-year business plan after only three months.
The segment’s quarterly profit increased by ¥54.9 billion from ¥10.3 billion in the prior-year period, making Innovation & Corporate Development one of the largest contributors to Mitsui’s year-over-year profit increase.
The unusually high first-quarter progress was driven largely by asset-recycling and valuation-related gains. Mitsui identified about ¥44.2 billion of profit from the restructuring of its U.S. real estate ownership and operations business, CIM Group.
The segment also benefited from the IPO of a quantum computing business. Mitsui attributed approximately ¥10.2 billion of positive profit impact to fair-value-through-profit-or-loss effects associated with that IPO, with reference FVTPL of ¥11.3 billion during the period.
Innovation & Corporate Development’s Core Operating Cash Flow reached ¥24.7 billion, representing 62% of its ¥40 billion full-year plan. That puts the segment well ahead of plan on both profit and cash-flow measures, although the significant contribution from asset recycling and fair-value changes means the 93% profit progress should not be viewed simply as a recurring quarterly earnings run rate.
Mitsui as a whole also started the year ahead of plan. First-quarter profit attributable to owners of the parent reached a record ¥294.1 billion, up ¥102.5 billion from ¥191.6 billion a year earlier and equal to 32% of the company’s ¥920 billion full-year business plan.
Group Core Operating Cash Flow increased to ¥280.9 billion from ¥216.3 billion, representing 27% of Mitsui’s ¥1.05 trillion full-year target. Other major contributors included Energy, where profit increased by ¥14.2 billion to ¥34.4 billion, and Mobility, Digital & Infrastructure, where profit rose ¥23.6 billion to ¥73 billion.
The strong start has also influenced Mitsui’s capital-return plans. The company approved a ¥200 billion share repurchase program running through January 29, 2027, with plans to cancel all shares acquired under the program. Mitsui also increased its MTMP2029 shareholder-return target to more than 50% of Core Operating Cash Flow.
Mitsui’s updated capital-allocation framework includes a ¥2.4 trillion management-allocation pool that can be directed toward growth investments or additional shareholder returns depending on investment opportunities and market conditions. The framework also includes ¥680 billion for strengthening existing businesses, ¥970 billion of growth investments already decided and a progressive dividend policy with ¥140 per share as the floor for MTMP2029.
The first-quarter performance therefore leaves Mitsui with substantial progress toward its annual earnings plan and additional capital-allocation flexibility. For Innovation & Corporate Development specifically, the key factor for subsequent quarters will be how underlying business contributions develop after a first quarter heavily supported by asset recycling and valuation gains.
