The Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Engineering have launched a graduate student exchange program focused on artificial intelligence, digital health, biomedical informatics and data-driven healthcare innovation.
The program will be offered through Mount Sinai’s Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences and will begin accepting applications in fall 2026.
Students from both institutions will have opportunities to study internationally, collaborate with researchers and participate in projects spanning medicine, technology and data science.
The exchange expands an existing Digital Health Partnership between Mount Sinai and HPI.
That partnership operates through the Hasso Plattner Institute for Digital Health at Mount Sinai, the Windreich Department of Artificial Intelligence and Human Health and HPI’s Digital Health Cluster.
The institutions currently have more than 40 collaborative research projects underway.
Research areas include AI in healthcare, clinical decision support, population health, precision medicine, digital therapeutics and health systems innovation.
The exchange will initially focus on students enrolled in HPI’s Master of Digital Health program and Mount Sinai’s Master of Biomedical Data Science and AI program.
Participants will work with faculty members and multidisciplinary research teams while gaining experience across both healthcare and technology settings.
The institutions said the program is intended to help prepare future leaders who understand both the technical capabilities of AI and the clinical environments in which health technologies are deployed.
The first HPI students are expected to study at Mount Sinai in spring 2027. Mount Sinai’s first exchange participants are scheduled to travel to HPI in fall 2027.
KEY QUOTES:
“The future of education and research is increasingly global. This exchange program empowers students to cross geographic and intellectual boundaries and experience firsthand how international collaboration can accelerate learning, discovery, and innovation. By connecting students with our ongoing digital health collaborations and more than 40 active research projects, we are strengthening the partnership between Mount Sinai and HPI while empowering future innovators to develop solutions that can improve human health worldwide.”
Marta Filizola, Ph.D., Dean of the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai
“The future of AI in health care will be shaped at the intersection of technology and clinical practice for the benefit of patients. Our transatlantic partnership brings those two worlds together: HPI’s technological expertise and the Icahn School of Medicine’s deep connection to patient care and a leading hospital environment. By giving students the opportunity to learn directly in both settings, the exchange turns collaboration into hands-on experience and helps prepare a generation of leaders who understand not only what AI can do, but how it can meaningfully improve health care.”
Lothar H. Wieler, DVM, Co-Director of the Digital Health Partnership for HPI
