Mozilla has announced a series of upcoming updates to its Firefox browser, highlighting new features across versions 148 and 149 that emphasize user control, privacy protections, and improved productivity tools. The updates introduce enhancements to settings navigation, built-in security measures, AI-powered assistance, and multitasking capabilities.

A key focus of the update is giving users greater control over their browsing experience. Firefox is expanding its customizable AI controls, allowing users to enable, disable, or tailor generative AI features based on their preferences. This builds on Mozilla’s broader commitment to offering flexibility in how users interact with the web.

The browser’s Settings section is being redesigned with clearer navigation and improved search functionality, making it easier for users to personalize their experience. This update is expected to roll out in Firefox Nightly before broader availability.

Privacy remains central to the latest updates. Mozilla is introducing a built-in VPN that routes browser traffic through a proxy to mask users’ IP addresses and locations. The VPN will initially offer 50 gigabytes of monthly data in select regions including the United States, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom, with availability beginning in Firefox 149. In addition, Firefox has implemented the Sanitizer API, a new web security standard designed to block malicious attacks before they reach users.

Mozilla is also expanding productivity tools within the browser. The newly introduced Smart Window feature uses AI to provide contextual assistance such as definitions, summaries, and product comparisons directly within webpages. The feature is optional and will require users to opt in, with early access available through a waitlist.

Another addition is Split View, which allows users to display two webpages side by side within a single window, improving multitasking and comparison workflows. Tab Notes is also being introduced, enabling users to attach notes to individual tabs to help track information and resume tasks more efficiently.

Alongside functional improvements, Firefox is undergoing a visual refresh, including updated themes, icons, and interface elements across toolbars, menus, and the homepage. Mozilla is also introducing a new mascot, Kit, intended to serve as a friendly companion within the browsing experience.

These updates reflect Mozilla’s broader strategy to enhance performance, strengthen privacy protections, and maintain an open web ecosystem while introducing new tools that improve usability and efficiency.

KEY QUOTE:

“The roadmap for Firefox this year is the most exciting one we’ve developed in quite a while. We’re solely focused on building the best browser, and our features over the next few months and beyond are driven by the feedback from our community. We’re improving the fundamentals like speed and performance. We’re also launching innovative new open standards in Gecko to ensure the future of the web is open, diverse, and not controlled by a single engine. At the same time we’re prioritizing features that give users real power, choice and strong privacy protections, built in a way that only Firefox can. And as always, we’ll keep listening, inviting users to help shape what comes next and giving them more reasons to love Firefox.”
