Mundo Raises $20 Million Series A, Bringing Total Funding To $24 Million

Mundo, an innovative startup based in Vancouver, has successfully secured a $20 million Series A funding round, led by GreatPoint Ventures. Prominent investors also participated, including Y Combinator, Next Frontier Ventures, and E12 Ventures. In addition to this recent financing, Mundo had earlier raised an unannounced $4 million in a Seed round, bringing the company’s total funding to a substantial $24 million.

The company aims to revolutionize how artificial intelligence (AI) systems comprehend and interpret real-world sensory experiences. It is developing what it dubs the “data layer for perceptual intelligence.” Mundo’s core mission is to improve AI systems’ ability to understand and respond to unstructured signals that humans naturally interpret in daily interactions. These include subtleties such as tone of voice, facial expressions, conversational timing, background noise, and broader social context. The company terms the ability to effectively interpret these complex signals as “perceptual intelligence,” a crucial aspect of human communication that has been challenging for AI systems to grasp.

To achieve its objectives, Mundo is dedicated to creating diverse datasets and evaluation frameworks that are instrumental for AI laboratories working on multimodal systems—those that seamlessly integrate various forms of input, such as speech, video, and gestures. Mundo’s work spans several areas, including natural speech-to-speech interactions, advanced video comprehension, and the exploration of emerging modalities that currently lack established training methods or benchmarks.

The infusion of new capital will support the strategic expansion of Mundo’s workforce as the company accelerates its growth trajectory. To bolster its capabilities, Mundo is actively hiring across research, engineering, and operations.
