This past week, Netflix Inc (NASDAQ: NFLX) co-CEO Reed Hastings released a new book called “No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention” and the company announced key changes for its content team. And Netflix VP of original content Cindy Holland is stepping down after working at the company for 18 years.

Key Content Team Changes

Holland’s decision to depart the company comes at a time after chief content officer Ted Sarandos also took on the co-CEO role and started focusing on restructuring the content team. Bela Bajaria will also promoted as the VP of global TV at the company.

“Since becoming co-CEO, I’ve wanted to simplify the way our content teams operate – with one global film team led by Scott Stuber and one for TV, which will now be led by Bela Bajaria,” said Sarandos in a statement.

Bajaria was previously the VP of local language originals at Netflix where she oversaw the development of content in Europe, the Middle East, Africa, Latin America, and Asia. Going forward, Bajaria will oversee English and local language original programs, including scripted, unscripted, and limited. Before joining Netflix in 2016, Bajaria worked as President of Universal Television and led creative programming for the studio through the production of hit shows like Master of None and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt for Netflix; Brooklyn Nine-Nine for FOX; The Mindy Project for FOX and Hulu; Superstore for NBC and Bates Motel for A&E. And she developed Gypsy for Netflix, Pure Genius for CBS, and The Good Place for NBC.

Holland was instrumental in Netflix pushing for original content with programs like House of Cards, Orange Is The New Black, Stranger Things, Ozark, Narcos, and Stranger Things.

“It has been a real joy to lead the original series team for the last eight years,” Holland commented. “From transitioning the company out of DVDs into streaming, to launching our first slate of original series and documentaries, I’ve loved every moment. I am proud of the impact and the diversity of the stories we’ve brought to audiences around the world, and to have worked with some of the most inspiring creators and executives in our business.”

Holland was Sarandos’ first hire in Los Angeles back in 2002. Back then, they worked at a small office in Raleigh Studios.

“These kinds of changes are never easy, and I am enormously grateful to Cindy Holland for everything she has done over the last 18 years at Netflix – first licensing DVDs and then as the driving force behind our first eight years of English original series. Cindy’s been a great champion of creators and the power that comes from seeing more perspectives reflected on screen – launching enduring dramas like ‘Orange is the New Black,’ ‘Stranger Things’ and ‘The Crown.’ Most important of all she’s been a fabulous colleague. We wish her all the best for the future,” stated Sarandos.

No Rules Rules: Netflix And The Culture Of Reinvention

Reed Hastings has published a new book called “No Rules Rules: Netflix and the Culture of Reinvention.” In the book, Hastings reveals the unorthodox culture behind the company.

“Hastings set new standards, valuing people over process, emphasizing innovation over efficiency, and giving employees context, not controls. At Netflix, there are no vacation or expense policies. At Netflix, adequate performance gets a generous severance, and hard work is irrelevant. At Netflix, you don’t try to please your boss, you give candid feedback instead. At Netflix, employees don’t need approval, and the company pays top of market. When Hastings and his team first devised these unorthodox principles, the implications were unknown and untested. But in just a short period, their methods led to unparalleled speed and boldness, as Netflix quickly became one of the most loved brands in the world,” says the book description.

The book emphasizes the importance of hiring the best people and receiving honest feedback from them along with empowering their decision-making.
