New Jersey American Water Completes Acquisition Of Montague Sewer & Water Systems

New Jersey American Water, a subsidiary of American Water Works Company, announced the completion of its acquisition of the water and wastewater systems of Montague Sewer & Water Company in New Jersey from Nexus Regulated Utilities, a subsidiary of Nexus Water Group.

The acquisition expands New Jersey American Water’s service footprint by approximately 810 water customer connections and 270 wastewater customer connections. As part of the transaction, two employees from Montague Sewer & Water Company have joined New Jersey American Water to help support continued operations and customer service.

The acquisition is part of a broader agreement announced by American Water on May 19, 2025, to acquire Nexus Water Group systems across eight states. The company said the transaction aligns with its long-term growth strategy and is designed to create value for customers, employees, and shareholders.

Regulatory approvals from applicable state commissions and governmental entities were secured by May 21, 2026, allowing American Water to finalize the purchase on June 1, 2026.

New Jersey American Water said it is focused on ensuring a smooth transition for new customers. Additional information will be mailed to customers in the coming weeks and is also available through a dedicated section of the company’s website.

Following the acquisition, customers will gain access to New Jersey American Water’s customer service offerings, including its MyWater online account management portal, flexible payment options, and financial assistance programs for eligible customers.

American Water is the largest regulated water and wastewater utility company in the United States, serving approximately 14 million people through regulated operations in 14 states and on 18 military installations. The company is celebrating its 140th anniversary in 2026.

New Jersey American Water is the state’s largest regulated water utility, employing approximately 875 people and providing water and wastewater services to roughly 3 million residents.
