Newforma Acquires Lumi AI To Add Verifiable AI Analytics Across AECO Project Data

Newforma has acquired Lumi AI, a Toronto-based artificial intelligence company whose analytics engine turns plain-language questions into explainable, verifiable answers across complex project data.

The acquisition expands Newforma’s AI capabilities for architecture, engineering, construction, and owner organizations by combining Lumi’s semantic and analytics technology with Newforma’s project information infrastructure.

Newforma said its approach to AI for project decision-making centers on three requirements: answers should be explainable, verifiable against underlying source data, and accurate enough to support decisions where liability and project outcomes are at stake.

Lumi’s platform was built around those principles. Its technology can ask clarifying questions when a request is ambiguous, expose the logic behind an answer, and flag potential data quality issues when they are identified.

The acquisition is particularly relevant for architecture and engineering firms that have accumulated years of information across RFIs, submittals, issues, model coordination records, email, document systems, Teams messages, and field applications. Newforma said much of that historical data remains underused because extracting insights often requires someone to manually create reports or search across multiple systems.

Rather than requiring customers to consolidate all of their project information into a single system, Newforma is positioning its platform as a unified view across multiple existing sources. Lumi’s agentic layer is intended to allow users to ask questions across those systems and receive answers that can be traced back to the underlying records.

Lumi’s technology creates a semantic layer over operational data, allowing the platform to interpret what project information means instead of relying only on where it is stored. Newforma plans to integrate that capability into its existing products, drawing on more than 20 years of AECO project data structure.

The combination is expected to support use cases such as identifying which consultants are slowing RFI turnaround, detecting projects with issue patterns similar to previous problematic projects, and highlighting submittal cycles that are deviating from a firm’s historical baseline.

Lumi’s analytics technology will also extend Vojo, the AI assistant Newforma introduced at Newforma World 2026. Vojo is built on Newforma’s agentic framework and is intended to support natural-language search and cross-project queries. Lumi will add the analytics layer that turns those queries into verifiable answers within Newforma Konekt’s project dashboards.

As part of the transaction, Lumi co-founder and CTO Tudor Boiangiu will join Newforma as Vice President of AI Engineering. Lumi’s engineering team will continue operating from Toronto.

Newforma, an Ethos Capital company, supports more than 4.5 million users and has connected project information across more than 20 million projects globally. The company said its systems have supported more than 24 million file transfers, 6 million submittals, and 1 billion emails.

KEY QUOTES:

“A lot of companies are telling this industry their AI is better. We’d rather say out loud what better means and be measured against it. Explainable, verifiable, accurate enough to act on when liability is on the line. Our customers don’t need another AI that sounds confident, they need answers they can verify. Pairing Lumi’s engine with the deepest project data structure in AECO is how we set the standard rather than join the chorus. Everyone in this industry wants to be your single source of truth. We would rather be the single view into all of them.”

Peter Cannone, CEO Of Newforma

“We started Lumi to redefine how people interact with their own data: to make it as simple as asking a question. Newforma brings rich project data and a large base of firms who depend on it. Combining that with Lumi’s engine unlocks far greater value for a much wider audience.”

Ibrahim Ashqar, Co-Founder And CEO Of Lumi AI

“We spent three years building an engine that asks instead of guessing. That work is worth nothing without data that already means something, and Newforma has 20 years of it. They had also already committed to AI and built the framework to carry it. So, I am not here to convince anyone this matters. I am here to build it.”
