The U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Energy Dominance Financing has closed a loan of up to $1.9 billion to NextEra Energy to help finance the restart of the Duane Arnold Energy Center in Linn County, Iowa.
The project would return Iowa’s only nuclear power plant to operation after it ceased generating electricity in 2020. The restart remains subject to required licensing approvals from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission.
If completed, the restart would bring 615 megawatts of nuclear generation capacity back onto the grid. The Department of Energy said that amount of generation is sufficient to power nearly 500,000 homes and would help address growing electricity demand across Iowa and the broader Midwest.
The project is also expected to create nearly 1,500 jobs during construction and support more than 450 jobs during ongoing operations, according to the Department of Energy.
Duane Arnold previously operated as a nuclear power facility before shutting down in 2020. NextEra Energy is now pursuing the regulatory and operational steps required to bring the plant back into service.
The DOE financing is intended to support the capital required for that restart and represents another federal financing commitment aimed at bringing existing U.S. nuclear generation capacity back online.
The Department of Energy framed the transaction as part of the Trump administration’s broader nuclear energy strategy, which includes restarting existing reactors, increasing output from the country’s operating nuclear fleet and supporting construction of additional nuclear generation.
The Duane Arnold transaction is particularly significant because restarting an existing nuclear facility can return substantial baseload generation to the electric grid without developing an entirely new nuclear site.
The plant’s 615 MW capacity would provide a sizable source of continuous electricity generation as power demand increases across Iowa and the surrounding region.
Before the facility can resume operations, NextEra must obtain the necessary NRC approvals and complete the technical work required to restore the plant to operating status.
The Department of Energy said the Duane Arnold financing brings the Office of Energy Dominance Financing’s total to three financed nuclear plant restarts. The office has also completed four concurrent conditional commitments and financial closings under the current administration.
KEY QUOTES:
“President Trump has set an ambitious course to restore American nuclear leadership, and the restart of Duane Arnold Nuclear Plant in Iowa marks another step in advancing America’s nuclear renaissance,” said U.S. Deputy Secretary of Energy James P. Danly. “Returning 615 megawatts of reliable baseload generation will drive down electricity costs, while supporting thousands of American jobs. This Administration is pursuing a comprehensive nuclear strategy, restarting existing reactors, increasing the output of our nuclear fleet, and accelerating new construction, to build the abundant, affordable, and reliable power system required for American prosperity and reindustrialization.”

“President Trump called for a nuclear renaissance, and the Department of Energy is delivering,” said EDF Director Gregory A. Beard. “Duane Arnold is exactly the kind of investment that will help restore American nuclear leadership, strengthen our energy security, and deliver the affordable, reliable power Americans need to fuel our nation’s future.”
