Northern Trust Asset Management, a major global investment firm managing $1.3 trillion in assets, has appointed Anwiti Bahuguna, Ph.D., as its new global co-chief investment officer. She will work alongside Christian Roth, CFA, who currently holds the same title. Bahuguna steps into the role following the promotion of Michael Hunstad, Ph.D., who was recently named president of the firm.
In her new position, Bahuguna will help guide the firm’s wide range of investment strategies. These include index-based approaches, traditional fundamental analysis, quantitative methods, and tax-efficient investing. She will also oversee active strategies that span multiple asset classes, as well as alternative investments. Together with Roth, she will be responsible for maintaining strong investment performance and refining the firm’s investment process and philosophy. She will lead a global team of more than 300 professionals and participate in several key leadership groups, including the Asset Management Leadership Group, the Investment Policy Committee, and the Risk Committee. Bahuguna is based in Chicago and reports directly to President Michael Hunstad.
With 27 years of experience in the investment field, Bahuguna has built and led global teams and developed strategies that combine equities, fixed income, and alternative assets. Before this appointment, she served as deputy global chief investment officer at Northern Trust Asset Management. She also held the role of chief investment officer for multi-asset investments and led teams focused on retirement and not-for-profit investment solutions. Earlier in her career, she spent 20 years at Columbia Threadneedle, where she was head of U.S. multi-asset strategy.
Bahuguna earned her doctorate in economics from Northeastern University and holds a bachelor’s degree in economics and mathematics from St. Stephen’s College at Delhi University. She also serves on the board of the Ammonoosuc Conservation Trust and contributes to its finance committee. Her appointment reflects Northern Trust’s continued focus on leadership and innovation in global investment management.
