Nucor To Invest $105 Million To Expand Indiana Utility Structures Facility

Nucor Corporation plans to invest an additional $105 million to expand its Nucor Towers & Structures facility in Crawfordsville, Indiana, pending regulatory and other approvals. The project will increase the site’s capacity to manufacture utility poles and related products used in electric transmission and distribution infrastructure. Nucor expects the expansion to create 100 new jobs.

The company said the new positions will pay average annual wages of approximately $87,500.

The project will add more than 120,000 square feet of manufacturing space to the Crawfordsville facility.

The expansion will incorporate advanced automation, new production equipment, and additional manufacturing technologies.

Nucor said those investments are designed to increase capacity while improving efficiency, safety, and product quality.

The Crawfordsville Nucor Towers & Structures facility currently employs 328 people.

Nucor is expanding the plant as utilities across the U.S. increase spending on grid modernization and prepare for rising electricity demand.

The company said the additional production capacity will help it better serve utility customers investing in transmission and distribution infrastructure.

Nucor Towers & Structures was formed in 2022 following Nucor’s acquisition of Summit Utility Structures.

That acquisition included an existing production facility in Pennsylvania.

Nucor later built new Towers & Structures facilities in Alabama and Indiana and is currently constructing another facility in Utah.

The company’s utility structures plants use highly automated, straight-line production processes and advanced hot-dip galvanizing operations.

Nucor has a substantial existing presence in Indiana.

The company employs approximately 2,600 people across more than a dozen locations in the state.

Those operations include Nucor Steel Indiana, the company’s first sheet mill, which began production in 1989.
