Nvidia: $2 Billion Investment In Lumentum To Advance AI Data Center Optics

By Amit Chowdhry • Mar 4, 2026

Nvidia announced a multiyear strategic partnership with Lumentum Holdings to accelerate innovation in advanced optical technologies used in next-generation AI infrastructure. The collaboration will focus on research and development as well as manufacturing capacity needed to support rapidly expanding AI data center systems.

As part of the agreement, Nvidia will invest $2 billion in Lumentum to support research and development, expand manufacturing capacity, and strengthen operations. The funding will help Lumentum build out its U.S.-based manufacturing footprint, including the development of a new fabrication facility aimed at scaling production of optical components used in AI networking.

The nonexclusive partnership also includes a multibillion-dollar purchase commitment from Nvidia and future capacity access rights for advanced laser components produced by Lumentum. These components are critical for optical interconnect technologies used to link AI processors and networking infrastructure.

Optical interconnect technology is becoming increasingly important as AI workloads scale and data centers expand. By using light-based communication rather than traditional electrical signals, photonics technologies can improve energy efficiency and enable faster data transfer across large-scale AI systems.

The companies said the collaboration will combine Nvidia’s expertise in accelerated computing and AI systems with Lumentum’s leadership in optical technologies and advanced manufacturing. The goal is to develop next-generation silicon photonics and networking technologies designed to support massive AI computing clusters and future “AI factory” infrastructure.

Lumentum said the partnership will support increased manufacturing capacity and accelerate innovation in optical architectures needed for high-performance AI data centers.
