OH.io Invests $2 Million In CVAT To Accelerate Open-Source AI Data Labeling Platform

OH.io has partnered with CVAT and added the open-source AI data labeling company to its portfolio, with sister company OH.io Capital making a $2 million investment.

The partnership combines capital with dedicated go-to-market resources intended to accelerate CVAT’s commercial growth, particularly in North America.

CVAT provides an open-source platform for labeling image, video, audio, and 3D point cloud data used to train artificial intelligence systems.

The technology began as an internal Intel project in 2017 and became an independent company in 2022.

CVAT is available through CVAT Community, its free self-hosted open-source product, and CVAT Online, a cloud-based version of the platform.

CVAT Community has accumulated more than 17,000 GitHub stars and more than 3 million downloads.

Under the partnership, OH.io will deploy a Columbus, Ohio-based team to support marketing, sales, and community initiatives for CVAT.

Initial target markets include manufacturing quality assurance and machine vision, robotics, physical-world inspection, geospatial AI, precision agriculture, and food equipment.

OH.io will also work to attract new users, grow CVAT Online adoption, expand enterprise partnerships, and increase the company’s presence across North America.

CVAT is already used across several industries and research areas. The Department of Urology at the University of Illinois Chicago uses the platform to train AI systems that recognize anatomy during robotic surgery.

Automotive companies and suppliers use CVAT to label data for driver-assistance technologies, while utilities use the platform to identify infrastructure defects in imagery captured by cameras and drones.

Other applications include training warehouse robots, mapping buildings and roads in aerial imagery, and analyzing visual attention in advertising.

OH.io was founded by Veeam Software co-founder Ratmir Timashev and operates as a performance venture that embeds sales and marketing professionals into AI startups.

KEY QUOTES:

“CVAT has grown into one of the most widely used tools of its kind largely through word of mouth. Partnering with OH.io will give CVAT the sales and marketing muscle to reach companies that don’t yet know how our technology can help them, while allowing our team to stay focused on improving the software.”

Nikita Manovich, Co-Founder And CEO Of CVAT

“The next wave of AI won’t be limited to screens. It will be found in robots, vehicles, and factories, and every one of those machines first has to learn to see. CVAT already has a product and community that engineers love. OH.io’s job is to get it in front of every company that needs it.”
