Olympus announced it has signed a definitive agreement to acquire BioProtect for $270 million as the company expands its oncology and urology technology portfolio focused on prostate cancer care.

The transaction is expected to close by the end of the second quarter of calendar year 2026, subject to customary closing conditions. Certain portions of the purchase price will be held in escrow for a period tied to uninterrupted operation of the business.

Founded in 2004 and headquartered in Israel, BioProtect develops implant technologies designed to improve prostate cancer treatment and patient quality of life. Its flagship Balloon Spacer system creates spacing between the prostate and surrounding critical structures during radiation therapy, helping protect healthy tissue. The implant naturally biodegrades following treatment.

Since its commercial launch in 2023, BioProtect’s Balloon Spacer has been used in more than 11,000 procedures worldwide. Studies cited by the companies indicated the device may help preserve gastrointestinal, urinary, and sexual functions in prostate cancer patients undergoing radiation treatment.

The acquisition supports Olympus’ Innovation-driven Growth strategy as the company continues expanding into adjacent therapeutic areas tied to endoscopy, including gastrointestinal and urological care. Olympus noted that prostate cancer is the second most diagnosed cancer among men globally, with approximately 1.5 million patients diagnosed annually. The company also highlighted expectations for significant growth in the global rectal spacer market over the next decade.

BioProtect generated approximately $14.5 million in revenue in 2025 and currently employs 130 people.

Olympus said the transaction will strengthen its position across the prostate cancer treatment pathway while broadening access to technologies designed to improve patient outcomes and procedural safety.
