By Amit Chowdhry • Nov 7, 2024

OncoveryCare is a company that delivers comprehensive and whole-person care to cancer survivors. Pulse 2.0 interviewed OncoveryCare CEO and co-founder Hil Moss to learn more about the company.

Hil Moss’ Background

What is Hil Moss’ background? Moss said:

“I actually had a previous career outside of healthcare—on the business side of the arts and culture world. A little over five years ago now, I started an MBA program to continue pursuing my previous path, but I ended up around six weeks into business school with a diagnosis of breast cancer at 28. That was the moment everything changed, and after becoming very involved in the cancer community during my treatment, I ended up completely pivoting my career to focus on cancer care innovation. First, I added on a dual graduate degree in public health, then started working across the cancer care space, and eventually decided to start Oncovery.”

Formation Of OncoveryCare

How did the idea for the company come together, and what is the market problem you’re aiming to solve? Moss shared:

“OncoveryCare came to be from a single realization: a pattern that I was noticing in the incoming messages I was getting from cancer survivors. Again and again, survivors were sharing that they were exiting active cancer treatment and feeling ‘thrown out to the universe’ – exactly what I experienced.”

“After months, if not years, of regular touchpoints with their oncologists, they felt like they no longer had a place at their cancer center but couldn’t find clinicians who felt comfortable managing their care. However, they continued to struggle with the mental and physical impacts of cancer treatment. Before this was a company, I just became obsessed with the problem: how was it possible that so many of us were feeling this way? And I ended up thinking it was too interesting of a white space not to build something.”

Favorite Memory

What has been your favorite memory working for the company so far? Moss reflected:

“Hands down, the first time I met each and every one of our incredible team members, including my co-founder, Dr. Justin Grischkan. I still can’t believe I get to work with so many amazing folks every day.”

Core Products

What are the company’s core products, services, and/or features? Moss explained:

“We have built a virtual care model for cancer survivorship, equipping patients with a wraparound care team of survivorship-trained clinicians, including NPs, therapists, navigators, and peer guides. Initial areas of focus for us include toxicity management, mental health support, navigation and care planning, and preventative care.”

Challenges Faced

What challenges have Moss and the team faced in building the company? Moss acknowledged:

“Certainly, one of the major challenges facing the cancer sector is the significant increases we are seeing in cancer diagnoses, particularly in the younger population. That growth is putting unprecedented strain on the oncology ecosystem—and it’s a big reason why we are building our model. We want to help alleviate the oncology workload and provide support whenever possible.”

Significant Milestones

What have been some of the company’s most significant milestones to date? Moss cited:

“Finalizing our partnership with the team at Tennessee Oncology was one of our greatest milestones! They have an amazing team and serve half of Tennessee’s cancer patients—so, together, we’ll be able to scale our model quickly across their survivor population.”

Funding

When asking Moss about the company’s funding details, she revealed:

“At this point, we have raised over $5 million – and our most recent Seed raise was led by the great folks at .406 Ventures, with participation from the McKay Institute at Tennessee Oncology, Oncology Ventures, and Techstars.

Differentiation From The Competition

What differentiates the company from its competition? Moss affirmed:

“We focus exclusively on the “survivorship” phase of cancer—building out the workforce and care model to fill the clinical “survivorship gap” that faces survivors post-treatment.”

Future Company Goals

What are some of the company’s future company goals? Moss concluded:

“Our vision is to become the standard of care for cancer survivorship across the oncology world!”
