Onix Raises $5 Million Pre-Seed To Build Expert-Governed Personal Intelligence AI Platform

Onix has raised $5 million in pre-seed funding, equivalent to approximately C$7 million, to expand its Personal Intelligence platform, an approach to AI built from licensed expert knowledge rather than information broadly collected from the internet.

The company’s first institutional financing was led by Alpha Edison, with participation from Garage Capital, Ride Home Fund and strategic investors including UTA Co-Founder Jeremy Zimmer and Real Ventures Co-Founder JS Cournoyer.

Onix plans to use the funding to accelerate platform development, expert onboarding, research and evaluation ahead of broader public availability.

The company describes Personal Intelligence as a category of private AI systems trained exclusively on licensed knowledge provided by participating experts, who retain governance over how their intelligence systems operate.

Rather than aggregating information from across the public web, Onix is attempting to capture expert frameworks, judgment, unpublished knowledge and professional experience that may otherwise remain inaccessible through conventional AI systems.

The approach is also designed to preserve the provenance and authorship of that information while allowing experts to license their knowledge intentionally and retain control over their intellectual property.

Onix initially launched with health and wellness experts and has continued expanding its roster. New participants include experts in addiction recovery, psychiatry and parenting, sleep psychology, integrative cardiology, longevity, Ayurveda and family medicine.

The company has also partnered with Mila, the Montreal AI research institute founded by Yoshua Bengio, and was named one of Canada’s Top 100 AI Startups for 2026 by ALL IN.

Onix was co-founded by David Bennahum, a former WIRED contributing editor and technology entrepreneur, and Dr. Nicholas Nadeau, who previously served as CTO of humanoid robotics company 1X.

The platform is currently available in early access on iOS, with full commercial availability expected later in 2026 and Android availability planned afterward.

KEY QUOTES:

“The next generation of AI will be defined by trust,” said Nick Grouf, Managing Partner at Alpha Edison. “Onix has built a fundamentally different approach around human expertise and privacy. That’s why we invested.”

Nick Grouf, Managing Partner at Alpha Edison

“Today’s AI dilutes knowledge, depriving people from accessing true expertise that defines the standards of human care. We believe the future belongs to technologies that preserve provenance, authorship, and human judgment, so people know who they’re learning from and experts retain ownership of the knowledge they’ve spent a lifetime building.”

David S. Bennahum, Co-Founder and CEO of Onix

“The AI industry optimized for scale by scraping everything public. But the most valuable knowledge was never public: the unpublished frameworks, the case notes, the judgment an expert builds over a career. You can’t scrape that; you have to earn it. Onix builds with experts, so their knowledge reaches people intact and stays theirs.”
