OpenAI announced it has acquired search and database analytics company Rockset to enhance retrieval infrastructure for making AI more helpful. The terms of the deal were undisclosed.
There are rumors that the deal was made in stock and it was at a valuation of several hundred million. Earlier this year, OpenAI raised funding at a valuation of over $80 billion.
Rockset was founded by CEO Venkat Venkataraman and CTO Dhruba Borthakur. Helping launch the Facebook engineering office in Boston, Venkataraman previously worked at Meta where he managed teams that built systems storing Facebook user data like user profiles, friends, posts, likes, Pages, messages, notifications, privacy, photos, videos, etc. Borthakur also worked at Meta and was the founding engineer of the RocksDB embedded open-source database.
Rockset enables users, developers, and enterprises to better utilize their own data and access real-time information as they use AI products and build more intelligent applications. And Rockset’s technology will be integrated into OpenAI to power retrieval infrastructure across its products.
Before the acquisition, Rockset raised over $115 million in funding.
